I believe the Japan-Cameroon match earlier today may have been one of the most boring matches in football history. :embarrassed:

Didn't see the Italy match, but I don't really mind them not winning. :grin:

No one in my immediate department gives a rip - but down the hall there is a guy from Netherlands, and several other guys who lived in Spain and Brazil for extended periods of time. So there is some interest here.
 
Dumb American question for you Europeans.......

I was watching a bit of the New Zealand/Slovakia game this morning, and a couple of times 2 guys, one from each team, would go up and try to head the ball, neither guy tugging/pushing/holding the other guy, but the ref would award the ball to one side or the other, and sometimes to the guy that didn't have position.

So my question is: What determination is the referee going by to award the ball to one side or the other, and in a case where neither guy used dirty tactics to get an edge on the other guy, why don't they just let play continue?

And I saw those couple of plays in slow-mo too, so you can't tell me I missed one guy grabbing the other guy's arm, etc.
 
Spain yet to play have the best team on paper, but this ain't the World Series it's just the world cup.

Sounds like ref error idn_smilie. Usually a free kick after a heading duel is because of a push in the back/climbing/pulling jerseys or such.
If neither did anything against the rules, the whistle shouldn't have been blown. :wink:

Then again things happen very fast in soccer (contrary to what non-footie fans think), so refs will often award the wrong side a free kick, or plain miss out on anything happening altogether.
Refereeing, especially at that level, is very far from easy. :embarrassed:
 
Looking forward to seeing Brazil tonight btw - that should be quite good.

A strong Brazil side should be able to reach the final, although their defensive play has been a bit on the naive side often times.
Apparently they've gotten better at that under Dunga.

There may have been contact that isn't quite apparent from certain replay angles. I dunno about stateside and in Europe if they're getting the same feed here but the replays have been pretty random, sometimes you'll get a shot or foul from a dozen angles and sometimes you'll get nothing.

If any player has "gone in" to another player i.e. contacted him in an attacking manner even if he hasn't grabbed, pushed, elbowed or barged a foul can still be awarded.

I want Brazil to destroy PRK. One because they are Brazil and just will. Two - well - we are not supposed to get political so I won't mention that reason....:wink:

Yeah, the keeper gave Maicon the little room he needed there.

And N. Korea hasn't been all that bad really. It's just that Brazil has that little extra to score the necessary goals against strong defensive teams like that. :embarrassed:
Brazil is looking pretty solid imo.
