The World Cup Thread.....

fuck the Germans  they looked impressive, BUT Australia have been really poor, even before the sending off of Cahill. I'd like to see them against a strong physical side like Ghana

I guess we'll see next match how good Germany really is. :embarrassed:
Australia looks fucked without Cahill next match in any event though...

Terrible refereeing throughout the game but Germany looked very good.

Ok Australia were pish (was there any attack down the right that didn't end in a reasonable chance for the Germans  ) but Germany looked great at the back and up front which is more than can be said or the rest of the teams we've seen so far.

Dutchies tomorrow afternoon. Will be looking forward to seeing how they shape up.

Absolutely awesome to see the pure joy of the Ghana players after winning. :)
That's what it should be about.

That was nice. Their offense is a bit too mano a mano though. They have enough pure speed to get away with that against Croatia - but not against a better team. But they were very entertaining to watch. I missed the Germany/Australia match though...:embarrassed:

I dunno, the red was a tad harsh, but to be fair to the ref, Cahill did tackle the guy from behind, didn't touch the ball, and went in "two-kneed"

Probably not a red, but I can see where the ref's coming from

Yeah I think it was more for the intent rather than the outcome. It could have been a really nasty tackle if he'd made a better connection and I think 2 footed challenges = automatic red.

I'd agree with a yellow, but red was way too harsh imo.
Fair enough, the tackle was from behind. Had he gone in straight legs and spikes first, then sure, a red card would be right.
Didn't look like Cahill was out to hurt the guy imo, but just late.

That ref isn't called Dracula for nothing though. He loves them cards. :embarrassed:

That angle makes it look like it had some good spin on it. I was out on a boat and did not see the game (gonna look for a web replay), but heard about that goal. I heard about an ugly defensive play on a US breakaway later too. Like the Brit defenseman hit the guy on the neck or something? What was up there?

Yep, tap in...my gran would have scored that. And she's been dead 80 years or so. :embarrassed:

One thing I'm glad about, so far, all the really negative teams..are losing. :)

Ah, typical Kuyt goal in other words.. :embarrassed:

And...I agree.

That said, I doubt Italy will lose in the group play though.
I royally hate their type of football, but their defensive play is none other than impressive. The cunts. :embarrassed:

Funnily enough, I don't actually mind Italy's style that much..they're very good at it and they do have talented individuals with great touch and they pass the ball well. It's the teams like Denmark and Serbia who really annoy me...just no idea about what to do when they cross the half way line..so they just set out to stop teams...that's why I was so pleased for Ghana..they never stopped trying to be positive and making something happen. The Dutch didn't play well today..but they also kept trying to go forward.

I don't mind Italy too much, until they're in a 1-0 lead in any given match - eventually they'll always stop playing and just defend that lead for the rest of the match.
Well they've gotten a bit better, but some of that style is still present.
I understand being overly cynical gets them results, but I don't have to like it. :embarrassed:
That, and there's a special place in hell for Materazzi. That dude's a nasty player.

Found out this morning that the USA goalkeeper Howard may have broken some ribs during the collusion that happened in the England match. If so he might be out the rest of the cup - which would be a huge blow to the USA. He played really well vs England.

well, Holland were a bit unerwhelming, but a solid win. Exactly as expected Denmark played very defensively and made it hard for the Dutch to get through. Oh well, at least Holland doesn't seem to peak too soon like in Euro 2008 and i expect for them to improve over the next matches.

I think we can all agree that Japan - Cameroon has been the most dreadful match of the World Cup so far  Even Algeria- Slovenia was more entertaining
