Quarantine fitness jam

Yeah, I’m looking at maybe setting up a point to point 50K or 50 miler on the AT and doing it with a friend. No need for a big race.

For the 5K, races all seem to be cancelled at about the point when my current block was going to end, but I think my personal motivation is just down because I’m a L&E Attorney and all I have done for two weeks straight is wake up as early as possible and help companies figure out the cheapest way to downsize their workforces. It’s brutal.

Also, speed work on the track is a slight drag. I may need to just de-structure my training somewhat and “listen to my body” for a while. It would be nice to just run for fun with a buddy.
ugh, mojo on the work stuff (and the running motivation stuff!) a point to point 50k or 50mile on the AT sounds awesome though!

I had been running about 40 miles per week for a while and then last week I just dropped off the cliff. I think I’m bummed out or something. I know I need to run. It will make me feel right again, but I can’t seem to get the motivation.

I’ve been planing to go for a sub-20 5K this summer, and then a 50K this fall in the mountains, but I’m hardcore on the strugglebus at the moment.

A sub 20min 5k is my goal. I did a 20:24 2 years ago but haven't cracked 20 mins since my x-country days. (Of course 10 years of smoking cigarettes came in between, so that doesn't help any.) Last 5k I ran the guy who placed first in the 60-65 age group had a time in the low 18s. Talk about an inspiration!

5-10k is really my butter zone. I can finish a half marathon, but just fall apart on the really long stuff.

Anywho, did another 4 mile run this morning and hit the weights this afternoon. Tomorrow is rest day. Belt is officially 1 notch shorter and wifey commented on my nice abs this morning.

Thanks, man. I finally broke the pattern and headed out into the woods for ~7 miles this evening. Feeling better.

The Georgia parts of the AT are borderline un-runnable in places, so I think it would make for a good “ultra.” Lots of forced “power hiking.”

I really need to get back into running. I have been horribly inconsistent the last 4 years. No running group in the area that works with my schedule. Right now a slow 3 mile jog would likely kill me.

I have been doing a couple walks every day, and I'm doing push ups three or four times a day. And planks. And I hate planks.....

There really is no substitute for talent. You can definitely get sub-20 again though. Just keep working.

Have you read Fast 5K by Pete McGill?

I live in probably the worst part of this city for runners. No parks. No trails. And I hate urban running (on the street or sidewalk) which is all that is close by. The 'hilly' stuff here is pretty brutal when you head to the west side of the city. But that is Pikes Peak country so its all mountains....

We were going to be in Denver this summer for my firm’s partnership retreat, and I was really looking forward to hitting the trails. Alas, COVID. My cool aunt lives out there though, and flights are routinely less than $100 round trip from Atlanta, and I technically have an office there. So, maybe I’ll have to make a solo trip sometime this fall. I wouldn’t mind someone to suffer with if you want to go run up a hill somewhere.

Well - I live in Colorado Springs, but work in Denver so that might work. I still know the trails up there.

I have not. These days I have time to read bedtime stories to the kids and that's about it.
Guess I could carve some reading time out of my running time but that seems kinda counterproductive.

It's a quick and basically enjoyable read. It's also an easy way to set up a training block if you know your most recent 5K time, what you're shooting for, and how many miles a week you plan to run.

I ran a little over 7 miles today on a 0.6 mile loop that circles through a couple of alleys and some back roads in my neighborhood. Made some friends with the neighbors who were curious about all of my laps. Nice day!

Took 2 rest days and got a 4 mile in today. Tomorrow I'm back on the weekday routine: run 30 mins early, work from home, lift 30 mins later

I got in 9 early this morning and was glad I went then - it got nice and sunny today, so there were too many people out later

First bike ride longer than a few miles in six months on Friday and another today, both 12+ miles. Very slow. Hoping to get back into century shape. Been five years and a couple years off bike completely since I did a bunch of those.

Good for you. I could never do a century. A metric one yes but that's about the limit to my level of comfort in the saddle. Much beyond that (or maybe it's 4 hours which ever comes first ) my butt, knees and neck start to be too uncomfortable to want to continue. I thought an organized one might be the trick since there are food stops etc but they always start too early for me to want to go and torture myself (I get up early but not THAT early)

Plus they're not going to wait for a good weather/wind day.

Daily short bicycle rides have been a fantastic way to get some activity and break up the day.
Pollen count has been crazy lately so that's not awesome.

Yesterday was a really nice sunny day and everyone who has a bicycle was out and about.

Honestly, getting the garage gym back is proving to be a blessing. I'm training how I want without having to accommodate silly corporate gym policies like dress codes and not grunting too loudly.

Yesterday I did a 3 mile run, had a little bit to eat, then did deadlifts.

Running shorts look really dorky for deadlifting but they work great for doing reps.
