What is your favorite record guitar tone?

I have a bunch. First off is David Lindley's electric slide tone off of Jackson Brown's ''Running on Empty''. Fell in love with that first time I heard it way back in the day. Second has to be Tom Scholz from the first two Boston albums. Third has to be the Reverend Billy... on damn near anything. Next up is a pair... Randy Flowers & Paul Crook playing in Meatloaf's band.

Gents, K is absolutely correct in his assessment here. He and I may never agree on anything else but on this we do. I can understand someone not LIKING it, but thin and scratchy?? I cant see how anyone could hear that as anywhere near thin, I consider it the ballsiest tone ever recorded, it's just huge.

True for me as well. But Mayer's live recorded tone is way up there. When I want to hair rock, I like Brian May's tone a lot. Punk tone is probably Tom Wisniewski from MxPx, or Mick Jones or My Aim is True Elvis Costello.

I just don't hear any balls in the tone at all, it sounds thin - simple as

For me...AJFA is my favourite Metallica album songwise...but easily the worst sound-wise. The lack of bass makes the whole thing sound thin and fizzy to me..as Todge mentions...the drums sound like tupperware. The guitar in isolation probably sounds "ok"..but it's so scooped, there's no balls..not my definition of balls anyway . As far as Metallica guitar sounds go..I much prefer "Ride the Lightning" and "The Black Album"..actually "Kill 'em all" is really good too, in a Marshall "rip your face off" kind of way.

Can't pick just one. I'd say the tone that I ended up copying was Steve Hackett's sound on Genesis Live (`57 Les Paul into a Marshall). The one I enjoy most would probably be early Steve Cropper (Esquire into a tweed Harvard).

I used to think that the Black album had the heaviest guitar sound in history. Then I heard it isolated, and it's actually weak. The bass makes that one heavy. Sounds fantastic overall, but I couldnt count it as my favorite GUITAR tone.

I always loved Angus Youngs tone on the second solo of "The Jack" live from "If you want Blood..." The one where Bon says "Go Angus" and he kicks in. Those first few notes define the Marshall/SG tone for me.

And I migh sound corny for this but Lidsay Buckinghams tone on "You make loving Fun" espc on the first Solo. "The chain" doesn't have a single bad tone on it either.

Anything by Warren Haynes, especially Worried down with the blues. Little Wing for a clean tone probably. Doc Watson for acoustic.

Another vote for Vicente Amigo. Though his best album, De Mi Corazón Al Aire, is not the one with his best recorded tone, imo. Too much reverb.
