ok...so here is the rundown from last night.
I only had time to get it laid out and wired up and I figured if I got into programming patches I would not get much done and spend all night fucking with it so I just put it in "manual" mode where you can turn each loop on individually and even that functionality made my night so much easier. My levels stayed consistent and I was able to use any pedal without fear of messing up an adjoining one. I haven't checked but I think every loop is buffered and it is engaged as well. No conflicts that way.
The signal flow works like this:
Sonic Research Turbo Tuner as my "input" for the whole thing. That runs to Input 1 on the ES-8.
The ES-8 loops in order are:
- Wampler mini Ego Compressor
- Voodoo Lab Sparkledrive MOD
- Wampler Pinnacle Deluxe
- Strymon Mobius
- MXR Handwired Phase 90
- Strymon Brigadier Delay
- Ibanez Tuber Screamer Mini
- Xotic RC Booster
Then out of the ES-8 and into the Strymon Blue Sky Reverb and that is the output to the amplifier. I was originally going to have the reverb in a loop but I thought about it and since it is kind of a "global" thing and I don't use it very much it opened up the loop for my Phase 90, which is much superior to the phaser in the Mobius and allows me to do things like phaser on the Mobius' tremolo sound (which I dig).
The Mission Expression pedal is run directly to the Mobius right now since thats the only pedal I would use it for although if I get a Timeline or an Eventide H9 in the future I'll probably route it through the ES-8 to use for all of the pedals.
I WAS going to put my volume pedal on the board but between running out of cable, the little bit I would actually use it on a regular basis and the space it freed up for other stuff on the board it got the boot. I might eventually put some jacks on the side of the board as a sort of patch bay and be able to use the volume pedal when I need it rather than lug it around all the time.
I have the Strymon "favorite" button on there to switch to my slap echo sound on the delay. That will be programmed into the ES-8 but I'll probably keep it on the board and use it for tap tempos.
As far as the new pedals went the Mini Ego compressor was super useful last night for many of my clean sounds and even the country lead stuff (which I would pair it with the RC Booster). The mini Tube Screamer was a bit of an impulse buy since I had seen it on some of the Pedal Show videos and the comparison with the large units was pretty favorable. I had a Visa Gift card riding around in my wallet from Fathers Day that covered all but $20 of it so home it came. I'm using it SPECIFICALLY for the thing I dislike about it as a main drive pedal which is the mid-bump. Sometimes the more "flat" response pedals I have get lost or muddy for the blues stuff and this worked nicely both with my Kinman pickup-equipped CV Strat and the McFeely 454 last night. It actually sounds better than the Analogman Prince of Tone so that might end up on Reverb along with a few other things soon.
Over all the functionality of the ES-8 was a huge benefit to me on stage even without me utilizing 90% of the features in the unit. I'm very happy with it and even the other guys in the band felt that it cleaned up my sounds enough that the stage mix was more distinct. Well worth the money
