Dig it! Mark's pedalboard rebuild thread.

OK. Got it kind of up and running. I need to run to GC to get more cable though.

Looks awesome. I haz jealous.

Question on the Mobius. Can you have 2 effects on at the same time?

No, just one at a time. Really the only drawback but to be honest most of the effects aren't ones you would stack on top of each other except maybe tremolo and phaser or combinations like that.

Just back from GC. Got more cable, a replacement iPad holder since mine is broken, a power daisy chain since I can't find mine and a Tube Screamer mini for @Help!I'maRock!

Maybe you wouldn't stack them, but I like nothing more than to stack modulations and reverbs  I love a good swirling mess

All wired up. No real time to program stuff but I can get through tonights gig with it in manual mode and at least be able to keep my levels and other adjustments from getting kicked.

ok...so here is the rundown from last night.

I only had time to get it laid out and wired up and I figured if I got into programming patches I would not get much done and spend all night fucking with it so I just put it in "manual" mode where you can turn each loop on individually and even that functionality made my night so much easier. My levels stayed consistent and I was able to use any pedal without fear of messing up an adjoining one. I haven't checked but I think every loop is buffered and it is engaged as well. No conflicts that way.

The signal flow works like this:

Sonic Research Turbo Tuner as my "input" for the whole thing. That runs to Input 1 on the ES-8.

The ES-8 loops in order are:

  1. Wampler mini Ego Compressor
  2. Voodoo Lab Sparkledrive MOD
  3. Wampler Pinnacle Deluxe
  4. Strymon Mobius
  5. MXR Handwired Phase 90
  6. Strymon Brigadier Delay
  7. Ibanez Tuber Screamer Mini
  8. Xotic RC Booster
Then out of the ES-8 and into the Strymon Blue Sky Reverb and that is the output to the amplifier. I was originally going to have the reverb in a loop but I thought about it and since it is kind of a "global" thing and I don't use it very much it opened up the loop for my Phase 90, which is much superior to the phaser in the Mobius and allows me to do things like phaser on the Mobius' tremolo sound (which I dig).

The Mission Expression pedal is run directly to the Mobius right now since thats the only pedal I would use it for although if I get a Timeline or an Eventide H9 in the future I'll probably route it through the ES-8 to use for all of the pedals.

I WAS going to put my volume pedal on the board but between running out of cable, the little bit I would actually use it on a regular basis and the space it freed up for other stuff on the board it got the boot. I might eventually put some jacks on the side of the board as a sort of patch bay and be able to use the volume pedal when I need it rather than lug it around all the time.

I have the Strymon "favorite" button on there to switch to my slap echo sound on the delay. That will be programmed into the ES-8 but I'll probably keep it on the board and use it for tap tempos.

As far as the new pedals went the Mini Ego compressor was super useful last night for many of my clean sounds and even the country lead stuff (which I would pair it with the RC Booster). The mini Tube Screamer was a bit of an impulse buy since I had seen it on some of the Pedal Show videos and the comparison with the large units was pretty favorable. I had a Visa Gift card riding around in my wallet from Fathers Day that covered all but $20 of it so home it came. I'm using it SPECIFICALLY for the thing I dislike about it as a main drive pedal which is the mid-bump. Sometimes the more "flat" response pedals I have get lost or muddy for the blues stuff and this worked nicely both with my Kinman pickup-equipped CV Strat and the McFeely 454 last night. It actually sounds better than the Analogman Prince of Tone so that might end up on Reverb along with a few other things soon.

Over all the functionality of the ES-8 was a huge benefit to me on stage even without me utilizing 90% of the features in the unit. I'm very happy with it and even the other guys in the band felt that it cleaned up my sounds enough that the stage mix was more distinct. Well worth the money :)

That's awesome. I knew it would make your gigs simpler and it did without you really setting it up. Once you get it programmed you'll be able to add in dance moves into your gig since you won't be tap dancing on the pedals

Spent a little time trying to get some programs set up. I'm only getting the midi to work correctly half the time. Using the ES-8 to switch the Brigadier delay to it a "favorite" saves sound and back doesn't seem to work for individual patches although there might be something else I can do. For the time being I have the Strymon single button back on the board but I do kinda like being able to switch between long and short delays regardless of patch so that might stay.

Notes from last night... I kinda want to replace the Sparkledrive MOD for the lower gain rhythm sounds now that the Pinnacle Deluxe is usable...they are a little too similar in sound once I get them adjusted where I want them and the Sparkledrive is a little "flat" sounding when the amp isn't cranked and its stacked with the RC Booster. I'm also trying to get away from stacking pedals so much.
I probably need to have more than two banks of sounds, too. Probably one that is more geared towards blues and roots music and one that has more of the classic rock effects and whatnot. There might be a few tunes where it might also be still be easier to run it in manual mode as well.

Mark, what is it that made the Pinnacle Deluxe "usable" now? I've probably missed it from the past, but was wasn't usable previously and what makes it better than the Sparkle Drive MOD? I thought the Pinnacle was a MIAB-type pedal, where as the Sparkle Drive does the TS-type thing with the ability to blend in a clean tone as well.

Just wondering...

It's not that it's different other than it's not stuck in a physical location where I can't turn it one without kicking the knobs on two other pedals. They are different pedal designs but they can be made to sound fairly similar due to the MOD function on the Sparkledrive (I always have it in MOD 1 which flattens out the TS midrange). I never use the blend control either.

So a little progress check. I haven't had much time to program or work out bugs so I took it to my gig Friday night as is and used some of my programmed sounds and had to freewheel it in manual mode for some other things that popped up over the course of the night. I'm struggling with the midi and somehow blew over my Wah pedal sound in the mobius so that was gone for the night. Also I need to fix my tremolo sound so that I don't have to move the expression pedal for the speed immediately. Just some time needed to sit and research the answers. It used to work and then in moving some sounds around I erased a few thinking they were easy to reprogram and I don't remember some details off the top of my head. I think I still have a MIDI USB interface somewhere so that I can use this and make the programming much easier: http://www.strymon.net/nixie-public-beta/

Anyhow, here is a short soundcheck video of me running through and explaining what I'm doing with it at this moment:

As far as my sound go, its funny how much I dislike the sounds at home (especially my overdrives) and then on the gig with the whole band going they seem to work really well. I need someone to sit in on my gig and let me hear the stuff from the audience in the near future.

Annnd....I bought a 1/1 USB to MIDI cable to use with the Strymon editors and it doesn't fucking work.
