Marks new "Getting Healthy" thread.

Boiling my chicken for the next few days now.

So its about five weeks later and I'm down to 255 this week. Feeling much better. Been eating lots of eggs, lean proteins, at least a salad or bowl of veggies once or twice a day. I played three days at the OC Fair this past week and didn't eat a bit of fair food.

My energy is better, I'm fitting into some older clothes and I'm also sleeping better. Another 15 lbs to go. I'm pretty determined this time around because everyone around me is having pretty serious health issues as they age and I really don't want that.

I joined karate classes 3 months ago and it’s the best thing I have done. Had problems with my back, posture and had regular attacks of sciatica.

Since I joined I haven’t had a single issue, I feel energised, more alert during the day.

I just got back from my annual boys' weekend with a couple college buddies. They're both carrying a fair bit of extra weight, both still apparently drink like we did in our 20s, and one guy is on blood pressure and cholesterol meds. I'm a little worried about them.

I’ve gone back to eating two pounds of veggies a day to keep me from eating shit I shouldn’t. But I was sad about Ozzy today so I ate a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Brownie Batter and then had a beer.

So I'm at 250. That was my goal for the start of school and we are two weeks out from my first day of class (I'm already in meetings and rehearsals but my target date was August 18th.

One thing that I did run across is that I most likely have something called "Anterior Pelvic Tilt" that is causing most of my hip, low back, and knee pain. YouTube shorts for the win. Some stretching and core strengthening exercises and I'm doing much better already.

Mrs. Wein bought some of the Ryze mushroom coffee stuff off of an instagram ad, so I figured I would try that and see what it does. Just started today. Tastes like someone pooped in a dirty muffler and then made coffee from it.

My next goal is 240 by the end of the year (it will probably happen sooner but I'm trying to be reasonable) and then we'll see what the Doctor says at my next physical. I'm feeling better, and I'm no longer physically craving unhealthy foods.

Just to be clear, laughing till I cry emoji is only for-

No way to laugh at that and love the rest of your post.

I've been doing the stationary bike every day I don't go on a mountain bike ride. I mtb every week or two. I use the total gym body weight excersizer as well. When I don't do that, I'll do push ups. We have been walking our pooch Jax for 2-3 miles walks at night. This week, I started co-coaching (dual head coaches) my 10 year old son's soccer team. I've been running around there. I chase lots of loose soccer balls. Yesterday, I had a goal and 2 assists in a scrimmage game. A kid had to leave early, so I filled in.
This is giving me Nightmares. That's the team name these 10 and 11 year olds came up with. They still have to vote. Me and the other coach love the name. Unless they come back with 'Night Terrors', it should win out.

I'm feeling pretty healthy. My blood test and physical a few months back was good.

I have to say that after a week of the mushroom coffee, I've bought into the hype. It might be the cumulative efftec of everything I'm doing but I'm generally feeling better in terms of energy and joint pain. My biggest issues remaining are soft tissue-based (tight hips, a knee injury that is taking forever to heal that I think is some sort of ligament tear) but I feel pretty good heading back into the stressfest of the school year this week. I'm also sleeping better.

Weight this week is 247. I treated myself to some Pastor and Carnitas street tacos from my favorite taqueria by the school yesterday but that was pretty much offsett my my 8 steps of running gear around the theater and tramping around campus (we are in several buildings across four city blocks).

I'm getting closer to my weight goals, now I need to start focusing more on my soft tissue and posture concerns and gain some muscle mass back. WHen I was last at my target weight I was much more muscular and now I'm a 55 year old guy who hasn't worked out in years. My body fat 10-15 years ago at this weight was much better distributed and in a better ratio with muscle mass. Getting older sucks.

I spent the weekend traipsing around national parks, conservation areas, and beaches.
Lots of walking. More than I normally do.

It was a long drive to and from, and I was driving Mrs DCF’s Challenger. Not my normal ride. So, I was sitting differently and using slightly different leg muscles on the pedals.

On the way home, my right leg started to tighten up and it felt like I had developed a blister on my right heel.

It wasn’t a blister. It was heel pain, likely due to the tightness and plantar fasciitis.
I’m still walking with a limp and it hurts like a m’fer, but only when I walk.

Yeah, getting old sucks.

Also, I seem to be gaining the weight that you are losing. I’m bumping up against 250. I had plateaued at around 235 for the longest time up until a couple of months ago.

I too, need to work on muscles/strength. If I drop something, I just kick it to somewhere where I can bend down with the help of a wall or something. If I can’t do that, whatever I dropped just stays there.

I’ve looked into some “7-minute chair yoga for old guys that don’t exercise” apps, but they all extend out into diets and other types of workouts, and want me to subscribe.

Find a place that has the Dr Scholl's machine and buy the inserts it recommends. I laid out huge money for foot Dr appointments and custom orthotics many year in the past. The Dr Scholl's inserts work better and are much less expensive.

Had a family vacation/reunion at a traditional style family camp. Think Dirty Dancing set except more rustic, on salt water, no one dresses nice, and you are doing sporty stuff most of the time with a lot of walking, punctuated by sitting and eating and drinking a lot. Active, but horrible Sysco institutional camp food and all the bad snacks. Drank a bunch more beer than usual for me. Generally I have cut back on that and cleaned up quite a bit.

and guess what? The first week and a half after I was back I. felt like shit. Like I had an inflammatory response to the whole thing. soreness, bloating, IBS, fatigue... Now, a couple weeks later and cleaned up again, I feel better, though the five I put back on is not gone yet. Was a good lesson regarding what my body tolerates now at this age, and how hard it is to recover. Not like I am thirty-ish and can go on a couple extra long bikes or runs and knock it all back off in a week. and as I crawl deeper into my early-ish sixties, I can see that I will need to do the older person thing with regard to vacation and not throw caution out the window, watch portions, etc. I am not interested in paying the penalty for as long as it takes now anymore.

Oh yeah, when I was feeling like crap, and feeling very inflamed, I went ahead and ordered some of this tea stuff. Basically the tea version of what Mark’s wife ordered. But I liked the ingredients a little better and figured I’d try the tea version. My research into this stuff made me think that, including actual varieties of mushrooms into the diet might bring better effects from that point of view, but figured for an afternoon or later morning beverage, it wouldn’t hurt and would be better than sucking down more coffee. And I’m trying to avoid anything with any form of sugar in it so if this works for me then there’s no harm I suppose. And maybe some benefit.

I got the turmeric kind for extra anti-inflammatory effect and for extra muffler poop dirt taste. . Though I haven’t tasted this yet so I don’t really know what it tastes like.

EDIT: It actually tastes good. Some good amount of cinnamon, ginger, and hint of turmeric in there. I don't notice the taste of mushrooms at all. A bit like a frothy thick spiced tea, but less sweet. I put a little milk in.

Passive squats have been helping me immensely. There are a million videos on this (or "Asian squats"). Just started doing passive deadhangs at the gym and between these two exercises and the APT stuff I've been improving.

Hey, I've been doing the passive deep squats for a while now. I probably need to start doing them longer, though.

Yeah, I was reading or watching on YouTube or something about how leg strength and mobility, impacting balance, is one of the key things for better aging. But I agree with @nuke_diver that I would have to be careful of my knees. I like to do lots of lunges too. That, and core, and mobility are my strength focusses these days.

5 knees surgeries, both knees, deep squats haven't been a thing for decades. My knees sound like they've got crinkle wrap in them with even moderate squats. I'm hoping to avoid have knee replacements in the future, so far so good. I was told in the 90's that I'd be a candidate in my late 50's...I'm 66 now and got at least a few years left. Though my right knee might need another scope  I hope not

Okay, my new thing is to stop bringing snacks into the house. That mostly means yummy frozen treats. Because when I have yummy frozen treats that are only 100 calories I eat the entire fucking box in one night. Next week I’m going to give up those decaf 2% cappuccinos that I love—that’s 90 calories a day.

I fractured some meniscus a couple years ago and then let the flap screw up the cartilage on the end of my femur so I have that going on and might have to have a replacement at some point. But I have been holding it off. I just looked up some other stuff and you can modify some of those exercise exercises or do different sorts of things like wall sets to also work on leg strength. I am able to do lunge squats if I am careful about how I do them and normal squats to about 90 without problem.
