Marks new "Getting Healthy" thread.

I have confirmed that alcohol makes me put on weight fast. Like multiple pounds in a few days. I can eat all kinds of stuff and lose weight if I’m not drinking. So no more drinking when my other half has to leave me alone with the kids while he’s at trial in another state.

was making headway with a couple/few weeks of good focus on no added sugar (or next to no) no or very limited processed in anyway. As whole as possible. Limiting breads and those allowed have to be whole and no added sugar. Almost no alcohol. Was moving slowly but weight started to change and I felt energy was better. Then I got covid, and was able to MOSTLY stick to what I was doing absent some flu medicine that had some sugar and a couple drinks and frozen treats that had some sugar. Still not much. And weight has dropped further. But also because I was sick and not hungry. As I come out of that, hoping to use that momentum to stay on the healthy train and hold to this cleaner style of eating and drinking. After a while, I may allow a weekend beer or so, but really liking how I am feeling without it being much in my life. And the longer I eat this way, the more I like it. As I recalled from before when I have eaten kinda cleanly. Hoping for a longer term re-set this time though. And a new normal.

I have to say that I'm kind of afraid to go off the wagon ust because of how I think it might make me feel.

I am now so thin that Levi Strauss does not make anything in my size. I’m going to try Ariat jeans and if that doesn’t work I’ll go back to The Perfect Jean company. The cost of buying new clothes SUCKS.

Fortunately, it is pumpkin bread season at Trader Joe’s so that will slow my weight loss down.

Trying to settle back into a slightly less absolutely strict eating habit without getting appetites and cravings triggered, for a sustainable and healthy pattern. Doing better than some other times I have tried this. Onward.

This is not a particularly hip suggestion, but I have found that the "Goodfellow" jeans at Target seem to work pretty well for me these days.

I am just about to hit my first number-that-ends-in-zero on my trip back down to 200 lbs. Thought I'd get there yesterday morning, but not quite. Only real changes are that I freed up a little time after work to exercise consistently, and my kid is at a new school with better lunches so I don't have to keep calorie-dense "kid food" in the house, which was always my default when I was snacky.

Just got my blood test results and other than a slightly low (but still much improved) HDL count, everything I needed to work on is now in "normal" or good ranges, especially my a1c, which went from pre-diabetes (actually just barely below for real DIABEETUS) to the normal range.

Now, to stay on track. I'm currently 52 pounds down, and honestly, the last few pounds I want to lose are more for vanity than anything else, but it gives me something to stay on track for.

I'm also still in need of work on joint pain and mobility. I do feel much better overall, though.

Honestly, it ain't that big a deal.

Right on.

Great job! If as you age, you can get used to staying at a lower weight, I think it is better for our joints and connective tissue. I am still 5 and a half or so pounds of where I want to be but committed to this path as it seems to be getting me there in a healthy way. If I can get to 185 (190.5 today) which I haven’t seen in a few years, and make that a new set point, may work toward even a little lighter if I can. For now, wanting to stay on track and get to about 185. Also, Wanting to strengthen my habits prior to holidaze so as not to just let it go and think I will catch up in the spring.

My calf presses in the leg press machine are now over twice the weight of my leg presses. Muscles are weird.

Hit 230 on Tuesday. 200 is probably my target at 6'2" and a fair amount of muscle mass. I lost about a pound a week since the school year started, which roughly coincided with my more consistent exercise regimen. At that rate, I'll hit my target at the end of the school year, but I'll be a lot less active outside of my designated exercise time soon, as it will be dark any time I'm not at work.

Update time. I've been around 227 for a few days. My doctor said he's like me to be 220 but that seems like it's going to be a little "skeletal" for my frame. Even when I was a gym rat I never got to this weight and I had a lot more muscle mass. Now that my initial goals are complete (losing the weight, fixing my blood test numbers) I'm going to focus on just being healthier, stronger and more mobile within the confines of a 55 year old body. Me last week at work:

65 days of tracking food with Weight Watchers and I really haven’t lost a pound.

To be fair, when I started I was about 6 pounds over my “normal”.
I’ve dropped backed down to my normal and stayed there forever.

I’ve bumped up my activity but not really exercising, just busier and moving more. The weekend hikes have increased in frequency but I expect that to fall off with the cold weather and having blistered out both big toes at a conference last week.

At some point, you've got to choose between weirdly skinny old man or sad fat old man. The middle path ceases to exist.
There are doctors experimenting with anabolic steroids in aging men to help push that day off, tho. When I hit 55 I’m going to find a clinic that will put me on avar and dbol so I can keep going until I break a hip during a deadlift.
