Marks new "Getting Healthy" thread.

Yeah, I don't think you'd look and feel too healthy at 200 pounds, Mark.

I've gotten to the point where I can't really eat any of the foods that cause inflammation. Sugar and dairy are out. Any time I try some now I totally regret it. Also going gluten free, although that is not a vital to me but both my wife and son are allergic so it makes cooking and eating out easier.

This may be the first Halloween in 48 years that I don't gorge myself on candy for a few weeks. I had a little bit after my gig on Saturday and I felt like shit for a day or so.

Sleep is a big issue for me. I just can't get it. Even when I have the time my brain is too stressed but I'm just too busy right now.
Yeah, I love good, well made, bread, and would love to occasionally add some good bread back in. But very moderately. I have not been diagnosed as gluten intolerant, but it does seem to help for some reason to avoid it. I may add in the occasional single piece of toast of Dave's seed and multi-grain bread with avocado, after we are done.

Regarding sleep, if I just try to get the actual time in at least trying to sleep, I do better than if I let myself stay up. Especially if that staying up involves reading crap about politics, and/or munching or having one or one more beer or glass of wine. I had a bad night the other night when I had had some caffeine too late in the day. So, learned from that. If I CAN get 7.5 hours plus most of the week, it seems to make a big difference in attitude and just how I feel.

Same on Halloween candy for me. Kinda looking forward to that. We are hanging out with another couple who are good friends, and sharing an "off night" special beer, and I plan on bringing one bar of very high quality, high cocoa content dark chocolate, but otherwise avoiding the little mini-bags of candy I normally stuff in my face like a glutton on this day.

Yeah, I was thinking Mark looked pretty bad-ass right now in the halloween gig outfit pic. Like I wouldn't want to cross him in the bar. ;-)

I'm hopping into the thread late, but every last post resonates with me. A decade ago I was a fit (if burly) rock climber, with excellent health.

Yeah, well. Won't bore with my details, except to say "what you all said."

What perplexes me is the process of trying to break down "where it all goes." When I'm motivated and have opportunity, I pursue the stuff I should. I know I find my job hard, but there has to be some way around that, because plenty of other teachers engage in fitness.

I am finding that some sort of social aspect helps, even this challenge, or this thread, where we encourage each other. Better yet for me and my personality would be some sort of fitness class, one that involves spin or cycling, and other fitness, ideally. I do not see Cross fit as being right for me at this point in life, but some sort of cardio/core/strength class with a bit of intensity. That always helps me because it is at a set time, and I get into it with other people.

The Whole Life Challenge has helped as a wholistic re-set, as we have encouraged each other to track progress and change habits. This is the last of 6 weeks, and while I don't think I met every goal I had in my head, I have gotten back in a good direction and changed up some habits. But a good spin/fitness class would be good right now. Heading into the time of year when cardio is hard to come by.

That’s always the trick. You have to decode how to make things work for your current situation. It took a lot of fear for me to get my shit together.

I think that's one of the problems for people getting/staying in shape is that there is no one size fits all, in spite of what is sometimes shown in the media. What SVL thinks might work for him, would never work for me as an example. Figuring out what works for YOU isn't easy and the path of least resistance is always to do less than you should good intentions not withstanding

For me, as an alpine snow skier, and water-skier, I need strength, quick twitch muscles, and core. Along with flexibility and some endurance. I am a generalist. If I cycled and did endurance stuff only, I would train differently. So agreed. What works for me is not what works for anyone else, per se.

On a different note, after this Whole Life Challenge thing, I am going to try to continue, and take it further, and try to be as vegan as I can, as a member of a family. With a night off per week option for an occasional bit of pizza or some non vegan option. And just try to stick to that as best I can so that over time, I hopefully eat cleaner and cleaner. I am hoping it will continue to help me improve.

Yeah, that is a little bit how I feel even now, after coming off the challenge diet last Friday. Not quite that bad, but still.

I guess the positive is I see how much better it feels when I am better about diet, and sleep and exercise.

I feel the need to jump back in the thread. First to say congrats to Mark. Your hard work is paying off.

Second, because I had my act together and then went through a stressful time at work and it has really knocked me off track. Can't seem to get the motivation and focus back. Had lost over 20lbs but feel like I've thrown it away the last couple weeks. Aside from getting my eating back on track, I need to determine what fitness path I'm going to take.

So carry on. I'm hoping to piggy back off the dedicated among you.

That is me every fucking year. I even had a delayed version of that for Halloween last week with the candy and some other stuff but I've gotten it back under control. I'm super stressed out right now and that is not helping my little episode showed me how badly I was affected by my binge eating, especially the sugar. I was kinda hoping to hit 230 by Thanksgiving and probably could have but at this point, I'm happy to only be up a pound from before:

lol

So glad I don't have to worry about that. Thanksgiving is only one day and Christmas/New Years are not really big holidays if I'm here. If I go back and visit my brothers then it's a different story because there will be food and a LOT of wine
