I think most of our problems here come from people kind of poking fun, like we might do in a group hanging out, and that kind of thing doesn't translate well to the text/forum medium. I've seen threads reported for people who took offense over the smallest things (to me, that is), but everyone has their buttons to be pushed, and sarcasm and rib poking is pretty hard to get across online.

That said, Mark is right that politics and religion are issues that often lead to problems. What is a joke to some, is highly offensive to others, so it is best to keep the poking fun about crooked pickups rather than political slant or one's god.
 
Heck, my former bandmate, fellow post-doc, and lifelong friend left science to become a jesuit priest. When we get together it is a non-stop argument over his view of religious forces controlling things versus my view that it is all animalistic instinct and entropy. We have a fantastic time. Had we met online, we would probably hate each other and both be banned from the web, as our discussions wouldn't translate well to text media.
 
It's a lose-lose situation. The squeaky wheel, as always, get the grease. Too often, we've catered to psychos and, in the process, lost terrific forumites who've left quietly without slamming the door. The latter list is surprisingly high, once you go browse this forum circa 2012.
 
My opinion is this: if you read something you don't like, move on to the next thread. You do not have a right to not be offended. That is not part of the Costitution or life in general. Whining is not attractive. That is all.

Text can completely kill the tone of a conversation. My wife and I have had MASSIVE arguments via text that would've been resolved in 3 seconds had we actually been on the phone and understood each others' tones. My Droid3 died a horrible painful death on a concrete floor during one such argument (probably the last one, really). Being that it was a Droid3 that died it should give you a clue that it was a good while ago since such has been allowed to happen.
 
I'm mostly on mobile and its too much effort to get into it these days. There have been too many stupid fights around here over nothing. Give it up, people.

I've noticed some bullying - see tompetty's threads. But other than that, it's mostly been the same old couple who maintain a victim mentality while displaying their true colours to the rest of the Internet.

So like, does this mean dick pics still aren't allowed?

I already said it wouldn't happen again FFS.

Man, this place has NO problems compared to photography forums. Those peeps are INSANE. I got into an arguement on my first post in one. Dude called me out on my testing of gear. I've been doing this for 28 years MoFo. I can test gear as I want, asshat. Bailed out right then.
