Agreed. Unfortunately, it seems we've gone the opposite direction, where one faction listens to nothing but Fox news while the other gets all their information from NPR. The middle ground is ever widening, but that is a topic for another thread that's already approaching 1000 pages.

I guess I just outgrew U2, and it pisses me off that they're re-hashing a seminal record from 30 years ago (that I fully supported at the time) as a political statement so Bono can caterwaul to the masses about what America is doing wrong, while holding out his hand for a paycheck.
I find it distasteful.
Maybe someday Bono will outgrow HIMSELF, learn some g'damn humility and quit being such a cunt.

I just wish these News organizations showed something other than US political content. CNN, NPR, Fox News, etc.
I want to see and hear about what's going on in the world. Show me some news stories from Japan, Zimbabwe, Chile, Port Darwin Australia. Or even if they keep it political, show us what's going on in, say, the French elections, etc other than just the winner. What the issues are for those countries, why people voted the way they did after the fact, etc.

NPR is centrist. Americans believe that NPR is leftist, because they haven't had a legitimate left in, like, ever. Fox is beyond what the rest of the 1st world sees as right-wing. Any other country's right-wing would still see the GOP as fascistic. Any intelligent well-informed person would take a hundred HRCs over a Trump. As the election told us, equivocating is dangerous.

Ha ha, that reminds me of a guy I knew way back when I was in my twenties. He was a total Deadhead. I remember being at his place once, and he tossed me his cassette carrying case (remember those?) and asked me to pick something to put on the stereo. You are entitled to your opinion, but I think you are 100% wrong on this part of your statement. There are a ton of bands who tour promoting a 25 or 30 year album. Last year I saw Social Distortion touring on the 25th anniversary tour of their self titled album. They played the album front to back, and a bunch of other songs after. The Offspring did the same a couple of summers ago (but I left after Pennywise and Bad Religion) Even if U2 just did a regular tour, they are still selling out stadiums and arenas without calling it a 30 year Joshua Tree anniversary tour and Bono still gets to say what he wants on stage.

That has become a bit of a trend lately. I think it's a combination of lack of quality new material, and wanting a paycheck/easy money. With U2 you get the added bonus of Bono rants. I kinda wonder what the other guys in the band think about that...having to hear the same rant night after night. I'd want a big paycheck too if I were in that band.

Bands that have been around a while can't win. If they focus on an older album people complain they are living off the past. If they release new material, people complain it isn't as good as what they did 30 years ago. :rolleyes:

I don't fault any band/musician for cashing in on their past success. If I could make 100 grand playing one concert, you can bet your ass I would. I'm happy to make $100 for a 4 hour cover band gig.
I also don't don't care what bono thinks or says, he's a great singer and u2 a great band. I don't agree with his politics, but that doesn't prevent me from enjoying the music.

Yeah. Either way, a large portion of the audience just wants to hear the hits. Might as well advertise that well.
Bob Dylan gets shit for not playing songs that don't sound like the recorded version, playing greatest hits, or talking to the audience. People don't notice or care that the band is killing it.
I'm OK with U2. I liked their first several albums a lot and I have enjoyed quite a bit of their later material.
I don't mind Bono's political activism. U2 has always been a very political band, although a lot of it was directed more at the UK early on, they certainly have not steered clear of being critical of the US. I think one of the greatest things about America is that we have a free society where even a foreign national can criticize our government in live concerts and on the radio in America without any legal repercussions. I'm OK with that. I think America is strong enough, as an idea, to be criticized, and the discussion and introspection that comes from criticism only makes us a better place. At least, that is how I imagine it works, or is supposed to work.
You can hate Bono as much as you like, and you can disagree with his opinion, and you can even stop buying his records, as you have the same freedom he has. You can post about it here, you can write a book, or whatever. It is a good thing.
