You know.....I want to state that I used to be a huge U2 fan.
HUGE.

Saw them on several tours in the 80's, and even was happy for them when they got popular in the late 80's with the Joshua Tree.
Over the years, their appeal has waxed and waned, and I still think they put out some good tunes (every once in a while).

That being said, I am so sick of fucking Bono. What a twat.

He cannot keep his mouth shut. He just cannot do it. Today, he's preaching on about ______(fill in whatever his complaint of the day might be...).

Perhaps I am the only one (or in the minority) that finds it extremely distasteful that U2 is embarking on their "Joshua Tree 2017" tour.

You know the one. The album that had a LOT of good songs on it. The one that made them famous. The one about what could be conceived as a world view of America, and also a rather in-depth of what was perceived as WRONG with America.
U2 made a shit-ton of money off that album, and it propelled them to being international rock stars.


So, after 30 years............they're doing it again. Except that NOW, they are all:

A bunch of overpaid, whiny, tax-dodging Irishmen coming to play a tour of the country that made them millionaires.............and complaining about the country that gave them that, because they don't like the elected president.

I find it extremely distasteful. I will not be attending the Joshua Tree 2017 tour, though I did attend the original US leg of the original Joshua Tree tour.
He couldn't STFU then about what was wrong with America, and I don't think I can stomach it now.

They opened in Vancouver the other night, and I saw some video from the show. The background screen/video showed lots of American Flags being flown outside shanty huts, staunch images of poor/indigenous types living in the badlands and the stark landscape shots of people living in poverty.

In Vancouver. Think about that for a minute. Vancouver is in Canada.

So, what?.........we all join hands and 65,000 people agree how bad rural America can be? And how America is repsonsible for all the injustices in the world? And how we should pay for everything under the sun that's wrong in the world?

Fuck you, Mr Tax-Dodging Rock Star. Fuck you very much.

I guess I find him pretty easy to ignore.

He does seem to rub a lot of people the wrong way, though. I'm not so oblivious that I haven't noticed that. :tongue:
 
I'll agree that he's annoyingly smug, preachy and self-righteous but to be fair, he HAS frequently "walked the walk", raising lots of money, starting and funding charities, and generally trying to bring issues such as hunger, etc. to the front of the public's consciousness. I'm not terribly fond of their music post-War, but can't really fault the guy too much, because unlike a LOT of "glitterati", he's actually tried to make a difference by putting his money where his mouth is.

FYI, my son would agree with the OP on every point.
 
I never loved U2 but I like a good chunk of their music. But I do agree that Bono needs to stfu. I don't know what makes him think he has ANY right to bitch about shit when he is nothing more than a singer in a successful band. That doesn't make him a politician or mean that he has the right to complain about a government in a country that he isn't even from.
 
I don't have any problems with celebrities having a political stance, whether they're from this country or not. But I'm not obligated to agree with them, and I certainly don't have to continue to support them.

I read yesterday that Todd Rundgren said his current tour will be political, and if you're a Trump supporter, you're best off staying home. That's his choice. And it's the choice of his fans to boycott or walk out if they wish.

If you have a platform, use it. Just don't be surprised when everyone doesn't agree with you.

Pretty much this. He has a long history of ranting about various topics, but as @bsman points out, he backs it up with money and actions, so he deserves credit for that. A lot of celebrities use their platforms for talk and not much else.

However, I do find him annoying and find it easy to change the channel if he is on TV ranting about something. I would have loved to have seen U2 in the 80's. Today, not so much. There's no appeal to pony up a few hundred bucks to go see a show that's 50% music and 50% political rant.

Will always a far smaller douchebag than the draft, tax, responsibility avoiding asshat sitting in the oval office.

He gets to complain about whomever he wants however he wants. Just as you get to complain about him and don't have to go listen to his rants in concert.

I don't see him as a db given the work he's put in to help combat HIV/AIDS in the un/underdeveloped nations as well as lending his time and talents to help fight global poverty.

He and the band work hard to create music and have been fortunate to make a shit ton of money doing it. I don't blame for wanting to keep as much as they can, especially given the tax structure in much of Europe, but I too hate the idea of the filthy rich taking advantage of every loophole available instead of paying their fair share. That said, the bigger issue related to that are corporations and the men and women heading them. They make money that makes U2's earning look like middle class income and they pay far less tax. They could be a power of change for the good and betterment of mankind, but they won't even lend their voices to support efforts that don't provide profit.

Bono's just another rich guy trying to keep his money, but he does a lot of work to help others, including making a lot of donations of time, talent, and money.

That said, I don't care about him from that perspective. I just think he's got an amazing voice and that U2 have created some amazing music.
