Biggest DB in rock music today - has to be Bono.

I never loved U2 but I like a good chunk of their music. But I do agree that Bono needs to stfu. I don't know what makes him think he has ANY right to bitch about shit when he is nothing more than a singer in a successful band. That doesn't make him a politician or mean that he has the right to complain about a government in a country that he isn't even from.

But that's not how it works. Our nation, especially the conservatives, has spent decades complaining about the leaders of other nations and their actions. Liberals aren't excluded, but they have focused primarily on human rights and environmental issues. The Russians complain us all of the time. We complain about China. Further, our global footprint in every realm effects every other nation. Some people speak out as citizens of their nation about what they perceive as U.S. wrongs. Others speak out as global citizens calling out the bullshit of every nation. Unfortunately, we are among the most full of shit countries on this planet. We wave a flag of freedom, the land of opportunity, etc. and then we restrict access to those opportunities for those within our nation (actual citizens) as well as those that would seek to become a part of our nation.

There are far bigger hypocrites andn douchebags than any artists. The worst ones in music are nothing compared to the people running the music or any other industry in the U.S. or anywhere around the world. I can live with Bono and anything he says. When he steps over the line, it would take something far worse than any insults directed at my nation.

Here's the deal. Bono should be fired out of a cannon for his last 15 years of miserable recorded output. I'd be happy if all he ever did was talk politics for the rest of his life if he's gonna make albums like Songs of Innocence.

Frank Zappa said it best.

I am a Pete Seeger fan. I don't think I need to say more. :hippie:

But, yes, when you use your fame or notoriety to express your political views, you run the risk that you will lose some fans. I think Bono is okay with that; I also feel he puts his money and actions where his mouth is.

Pete was less fiscally successful than Bono, but also far less concerned with finances. Seeger is the ideal of an artist with ideals, using his talents to incite action against corruption. God love him. We are sadly wanting of more of his spirit...all the more so since his passing. There weren't enough people of influence in the arts taking similar stands when Pete was around and the number only dwindled during his long life. Who is there now? Bono? Anyone else?

Just another take on Chad's point, the more money Bono "keeps" the more he can control how it's spent. In much of the case with him, that's trying to improve the world and he often puts significant amounts of money where his mouth is.

While Bono can get a little preachy sometimes, I admire his efforts to use the platform he's been given to try to make the world a better place. U2 a political band? Shocking, just shocking. Bullet the Blue Sky, Pride in the Name of Love, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Silver and Gold etc etc etc.

The way I see it, Bono has just as much of a right to comment on about the world's affairs as anybody, including random posters on a guitar message board. And unlike most of us, he puts his money where is mouth is.

I've never understood this "shut up and play your guitar" thing.

People who believe that artists shouldn't be vocal about their politics don't deserve art.

That said...

Bono and crew don't hold citizenship here BY CHOICE. (They sure own enough land/property here, though....)

(Something to do with the fact that they'd have to pay a LOT more taxes on income if they were actually citizens.....)

IMO, if you choose not to hold citizenship in a country, perhaps you should keep the preaching down about what's wrong with said country's politics.
At least while you have your hand out for a paycheck.

So.....Bono and the boys can't vote in the US, by choice. Perhaps he should focus his rants on something a little more close to home.

"Fuck America! Fuck the President! Fuck what America stands for! Fuck all the injustice! And you ALL need to give more of your tax money to ________......__________......and support __________.

Me? I'm cool....Can I have a paycheck, please?"
