All great players you mentioned, Ash and The Edge are very high on my list of exceptional textural players. Andy Summers, Jamie West Oram, James Honeyman Scott, Johnny Marr also come to mind and a host of others…players like that were far more interesting to me than the technical guitar hero types. I think some of that lineage goes back to Syd Barrett, he was so refreshingly out of the box compared to the mostly blues rock players of the late 1960’s.I think McKay was super important too. McKay and McGeoch and peers like Steve New, Keith Levine, Daniel Ash, and The Edge (obviously) gave rock guitar a new vocabulary and set of timbres.
