Robert Smith's guitar sounds like a jet taking off.
Robert often gets bagged on by hardcore McGeoch fans for not playing the parts 100% accurately, but I think he did a damn good job filling those very big shoes…not to mention, John sat down with Robert and showed him how to play the songs (pretty cool of John, esp. considering the circumstances). One of my fave tracks, nice little diddy about the Yorkshire Ripper.
I haven't heard them in ages. Are they still together?
I don’t know that I’d want to hear any other guitarist playing John’s parts verbatim, just a little weird…Robert’s interpretations were more than adequate and you can still hear his own style coming through. I saw this pop up somewhere today, kind of surprising because he’s been off the radar for so long. Loved his playing too, and obviously influenced John McGeoch to a degree.Yeah, I think Robert Smith did a damn good job too. He's playing simplified versions for sure, but I wouldn't expect him to have all the McGeoch intricacies given the circumstances, and Smith's versions do the job well and communicate his own personality.
I mean I can get where McGeoch obsessives want to hear his playing replicated, but looking at the big picture that was too much to ask for. Robert Smith's not a McGeoch tribute artist.
