The real protest is in the 4th and 5th verses. Probably not gonna make it as a national anthem.

As I went walking I saw a sign there

When I think of J. Mellemcamp he just, at least to me seems to represent "America". Or at least middle class values.

Yes, but it is an honest call for action, and therefore, should be the national anthem, if we were honest with ourselves. Anthems don't have to say everything is perfect. IMHO. :)


I admit it might not be popular with the folks that like to wear plastic straw hats with paper red white and blue hat bands on them and wave flags at election time.

Of particular import is the clear lack of religious subtext or war...at least to me. That said, I know we don't have a nation were people not escaping religious prosecution (or at least what they perceived) nor would we have a the "U.S." without the Revolutionary War (or one that I want to live in had the Civil War been lost). Further, there are some harsh reality and downer aspects to Guthrie's tune that are hard for some to appreciate, but I enjoy realism.

Admitting and addressing those things shows courage, something out nation has been known for. Pull that bandage off and let that wound get some air, and all that. Makes it a perfect anthem. The heroes or situations featured in Springsteen's best anthems also are human and flawed for example. And his best work does not approach this song (that he admits I believe, and he likes to cover this song).

Kinda what I wanted Hillary and her campaign to do with the problems with the DNC and the primary process, and the concerns of the Bernie supporters. Admit there are problems, and vow to address them. Shows courage, honesty, and grit. I believe she has some of that, as she has worked this long for things she cares about. But she doesn't show it very much publicly, and IMHO puts her foot in her mouth publicly by either saying the wrong thing, or not addressing the issues at all.

She should listen to that song for a while. A good long while.
