Marks new "Getting Healthy" thread.

Update time. I've been around 227 for a few days. My doctor said he's like me to be 220 but that seems like it's going to be a little "skeletal" for my frame. Even when I was a gym rat I never got to this weight and I had a lot more muscle mass. Now that my initial goals are complete (losing the weight, fixing my blood test numbers) I'm going to focus on just being healthier, stronger and more mobile within the confines of a 55 year old body. Me last week at work:

So, you decorate the local adult bookstore as a side gig? :howie:

Honestly, my dad at 75 is the same level of pudginess he's been since he was 10, but he works his ass off to stay there--100 mile bike ride type stuff.
I'm lighter than I was in college and I work my ass off too - bike ride stuff  (not 100 miles at a time but about 100-150 a week) but I don't do it to stay there. I seem to have a problem that most would love, my metabolism isn't getting slower as I get older (66 now). I seem to need about 2500 cal a day to stay at my current weight. With riding that's more like 3500-4000 a day depending on the ride and it's not easy eating that much all the time .So yeah skinny old man.

And I apologize in advance for being abbynormal

Huh. I ate like a glutton for the last few days and lost a pound.
I also parked my ass on the couch for most of those days.

I'm the same. I was sickly skinny as a kid all the way through my 20s. At 56, I'm about 30 lbs heavier than I was in college, which is a good thing. I walk/hike, row, and lift regularly, and I eat a lot. I haven't tracked my calories, but I'm sure it's around 3,000/day. I just got back from a 17-day trip where we were hiking an average of 8 miles a day. After all that hiking, combined with not being able to be on my regular meal plan and not lifting, I visibly lost muscle mass. (Or maybe I just have body dysmorphia.) So weirdly skinny middle-aged man here.

I got a new whitewater kayak on the way. But 5-6 yrs of couch potatoing has taken its toll. This morning I started back w/ a Mon/Wed/Fri morning yoga class to get limbered up and get some core strength back so I don’t drown myself. Just finished 1st session and feel better than I have since before Covid. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow, lol.
Roll practice coming up. Thursday!

Every time I try getting back into yoga it makes my lower back hurt for days. But I can do deadlifts just fine. This makes no sense to me because I should be doing yoga to recover from the deadlifts.

Anyway, it might be a few days before I can get back to the gym and normal eating. I was brutally sick yesterday. I kept waking up in the night to puke and I was so confused that I thought I had too much to drink and blacked out.

Thats weird. I have to be very careful lifting anything to avoid aggravating an old lower back injury from moving furniture years ago.
But yoga makes my back feel better and stronger. I dont think a yoga session has ever caused a lower back issue.
It will inflame my rheumatoid arthritis though.
I have to proceed gradually and not push too hard at any one session or my shoulders, hips, or knee joints will flare up and swell and set me back for days.
But I have to get back some fexlibility and core strength to get my kayak roll back. Right now it's questionable if I can ever twist myself into a set up position, much less have a powerful enough hip snap to roll effectively. In whitewater kayaking a dependable roll is pretty much essential if your gonna have any fun, and if you dont roll you swim. Excessive swimming puts unnecessary stress and responsibility on your paddling companions chasing you and your shit down the river, not to mention dealing with your potential exaustion/hyperthermia/broken bones.

I haven't missed my M-F pre-work cardio in months. I'm consistent with the rat in a cage workout. I do other stuff too. I'm at my target weight.

ok....check in time. Just hit 225 today. Doctor wants me at 220. The only thing I'm struggling with are mobility issues with my low back (mainly because I think I hurt something this weekend on my gig) and my frozen shoulder, which is slowly improving. I survived Halloween and school food season intact.

Oof, frozen shoulder sucks. Mrs. Walt had it last year. The good news is it just kinda goes away by itself after a while. The bad news is it's awful while you have it.
Mojo!

It's week 12 of school (which is when I started exercising as a default every day, instead of trying to exercise X times a week), and I'm down 11 pounds without any intentional change in diet. I'm home sick today, but still did slightly lower-intensity full-length workouts last night and today. And for the past few years, I'd have been such a few times already by this point in the school year.

Every other week the housekeepers come and the incredibly fat one tells me I’m getting too skinny. It’s nice to have someone in my life who notices. It motivates me to keep filling out meals with vegetables and going to the gym.
