How long til the new OS comes out?
I tell my mother in law all the time to go ahead and buy because with computers, there's always something new right around the corner. If it's a month or two it might be worth the wait. Otherwise, just buy it.
You can always apgrade OS later. There will be another new one in a year anyway.

i think there is going to be a hardware upgrade on the mac minis but i'm not positive....
Ultimately this is going to run our flatscreen in the lobby and allow the receptionists to do scheduling and emails so it really doesn't matter that much but I'd feel better about spending the money if I knew it was on the front end of an upgrade and not the back since this stuff needs to last a while.

The only thing I don't like about my mini is only 4 usb ports. A regular keyboard, mouse, and time machine take up 3 leaving me with only 1 free. Unless of course you spring for the wirless mac keyboard and wireless mouse to free up some usb. I did not.
Even my iMac only has four, which is a bummer but I have a USB hub for the old computer that I can use.

I want to go back to a Mac but at this time cannot justify it since all of my work software is PC based - ugh.....
At least Windows 7 isn't a complete piece of shit like Vista was. I actually like my Win 7 laptop.

Our IT people are currently testing Lion for some of our homemade software stuff to see if it is ready for us. We usually are about a month behind on getting the green light on upgrades. Here are the 'common use' apps they have tested so far. It looks pretty stable/solid.
Tested Applications and Services:
** Office 2008 will only work if the Lion upgrade is done as a true upgrade, not a new install. Additionally, Office 2008 software updates may not work after installing Lion, so it is recommended to install all software updates prior to installing Lion. VPN services via Cisco do not currently work with this OS upgrade. An update for VPN access is pending.

Thats pretty cool. I'm not sure I'll upgrade the other two Macs here to Lion since ProTools usually doesn't play well with new variations of OSX until they've been out a while. It would be nice to have a front desk machine that is quick and stable though. I have a 5 year old Dell with XP there now that was a mid level machine back then...it'll get demoted to the teachers email and scheduling terminal. 
Oh, one other thing from the IT email about Lion. Apple has no uninstaller package and there is no way to remove/downgrade back to Tiger if something you need doesn't work. They suggested making a complete backup before installing so you can go back on your own to a blanked disk, just in case.
