Looks like the UK has decided to leave the EU

As a Dutch immigrant in the UK, I am very worried. The best I can hope for is another Scottish independence referendum to allow Scotland, which voted 60%-30% to stay in the EU, to stay in the EU.

On the short term, I am expecting an economic downturn and political turmoil.

I feel so upset a decision like this, with such a immense impact, was ever left to the great unwashed. This was a political power struggle within the Conservative party played out in an ugly referendum where the majority voted based on jingoism, xenophobia and a general lack of understanding about the nature of international trade: "We are going to be Great again!" (rings a bell?). The fact that Rupert Murdoch, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin were amongst the biggest supports of the UK leaving the EU says enough...

Even though I have lived and worked in Scotland for over 15 years, I was not able to vote, nor any other non-Brit.

I am genuinely sad and shocked

I know a bunch of my friends from EU countries that work at UK universities are really worried about EU grant funding for science and their ability to legally remain in the UK, apply for NHS research grants, hold Wellcome Trust UK funding, and so on.

yep, too bad all this just got ignored in favour of empty slogans like 'taking our country back' or 'getting our sovereignty back'.

Pmc - listening to the whole of sturgeons speech today, the indy2 stuff was crowbarred in at the end- she's very much gunning for some sort of deal that will allow Scotland to remain, in some capacity, within the eu.

Wok, I voted remain and I'm upset but you were quite happy to have the 'great unwashed' have their say on Scotland's place within the UK 2 years back....

I'm not sure I grasp all the complexities of what this means, but the short term it looks like things are going to be a little messed up in the financial markets. I saw on the news this morning that Scotland plans a fast vote on independence again, as the majority of Scots voted to stay in the EU. The Northern Irish are also talking about reunification with Ireland. Crazy stuff. It all seems very peaceful, which is a nice alternative to past world history. It seems a lot of odd shifts towards nationalism, often with little regard for the financial and political implications. CNN was interviewing some Dutch nationalist who wants to pull the Netherlands out of the EU. Apparently, France also has a lot of people thinking this way as well.

Blue is leave, yellow is stay. Scotland and N. Ireland look pretty unified in their decision. This might be the beginning of some turbulent times in the U.K.

I voted Yes two years ago, because I saw this coming and it was the only way I had a say in this. As a non-British immigrant in the UK, I could vote in the Scottish referendum, but not this one.
