I think I lost my mind and bought an SG

Found a good deal on a Gibson SG so I jumped on it. The guitar is a Derek Trucks signature model, so it is very much a 61 reissue SG without the pick guard, but in a slightly different finish and with 57 classic pickups. The neck shape is also a bit different than the standard SG 61. I understand Trucks wanted it to feel like the early SG models that had a Les Pauls style neck joint, so this apparently does. It also has the remnants of a Lyre trem that isn't attached to anything. I kind of like the look of it, but I think it was a polarizing feature. Nicely grained one piece mahogany body, rosewood fretboard, etc. Exactly 7 pounds. Looks pretty awesome to me.

Here are some pics.

Very nice! The '57 Classic pickups are wonderful.
I'll hopefully be able to hold on to my SG, but if not, someone here will get very lucky.

On purpose or impulse?

I've been looking for a SG for a long time. I don't really like the Gibson high output pickups that come in the SG standard, and I certainly don't want the robotic stuff that Henry was putting on there recently. The 61 seems to have disappeared from the line up. That left a few artist models and the custom shop. Gibson seems to have dumped Trucks, or vice versa, so his signature models are getting blown out. More than an SG standard, but less than a 61 by a good amount. It seemed to have everything I've wanted for a while. Also, look at that hunk of mahogany. Internet suggests that the artist series models never got screwed with by Henry and managed to avoid a good amount of the wood substitutions that came around when Gibson got caught with illegal wood. No idea how true that is. I guess it kind of makes sense that changes to the specs of a model bearing an artists name would require approval from the artist.

Love it. Channel your inner Skydog on that baby.

That exact SG or a Tweedy like Andy's are to die for.

I really wanted a Tweedy when they first came out. I just couldn't get past the color. I get that some love it, but I've never been a big fan of blue, so it kind of killed it for me.

Congrats, SGs are great. IIRC the Trucks model has the tailpiece because Trucks thinks it looks cool but took the mechanism out of his because he doesn’t use it.

Indeed, this is a hollowed out original. Apparently, it looks cool, and it offsets some of the Sg neck dive, so Trucks had it on his signature model. Kind of odd, but I dig the look.

HNSGD!

I will admit that when I saw that guitar yesterday it sure tempted me, too. If I bought, though, it would have only been an impulse buy, and I can't afford to do that right now.
