Hurricane mojo, part dos: Irma

I have seen hurricanes rub islands down to sandbars, split them in half or even bury them. If the Keys indeed take a direct hit from Irma (and it sure looks that way) it could be months before folks who live here will even be able to get back to see what's left, 'cause you can say goodbye to the Hwy 1 Bridge. They'll be back to using ferries. Hate to sound so dooms-dayish, but this one's really bad news. We can only hope for some unforseen miracle that would shut her down. Not likely.
And you folks upstate, or in GA/SC aren't out of the woods by a longshot either, or even into the Ohio Valley. This system could run inland, get blocked and dump tons of rain.

They have taken some big shots over the years and always bounce back but this one is bad. We go down a couple times a year and although some of the local charm has gone it is still a great place to go relax and fish. And drink. Of course.

Hurricane mojo. I went through one when I lived on the Mississippi gulf coast. One was enough for me. No hurricanes (or typhoons) in Colorado. I'll stay here thank you.

Mojo. My grandmother is evacuating to my mom’s place in Asheville. And praying for her collections of antique glassware. She owns a recently built house so it’s just 2x4s and siding vs. category 5 wind. I hope the builder used hurricane nails.
As for NYC, I went through that with Sandy. No power and intermittent water for a week. But the bodega guys had their families driving supplies in from Jersey and weren’t gouging anybody, so we got through it all. It was really hard on the elderly neighbors tho.

That far inland, they'll likely see nothing above a tropical storm wind force, depending on the path, etc. The rain and flooding is a greater concern. I have in-laws in Maggie Valley.
Also, Irma will drop intensity at least once before it gets close to FL.

People are in full panic mode here in SFL. Some gas stations are out of gas, the ones that still have gas have only premium and the lines to get to the pump remind me of the gas rationing of the 1970's. I filled up last night so I'm good. My place has accordion shutters but my GF's apt does not so I will have put up her shutters in a day or so. Food and water situation are okay. Bring it on!
