Harley rant . . .

or......

No, that one's a little too militaristic for me. Maybe a Ural.

I get really pissed off at the idiots who drive around with no helmets, no protective gear.
Had I not been wearing a helmet, I'd have left this Earth on April 16th, 1983.

Helmets are solely responsible for keeping "The Full OGG" alive and well deep into a new Millennium. Think of the asshats who would have skated if not for the good folks at Bell...

Hmmmm. I may have to rethink my stance.

Took my bike out on the road today for the first time this year. Full face helmet, leather jacket, gloves and boots. When it warms up I'll wear the half shell more.

I've been riding since I was 12 and have always worn a helmet. It feels weird to me if I'm not wearing one. I often end up in NH on rides and even though they have no helmet law, I still wear it. I do know (and ride with) guys who remove their helmets at the state line. Their choice.

I wear helmets in town. No helmet will help going down at 70 mph on the highway.

Of course it will, but it depends on the circumstances. If you hit a brick wall at 70 mph, you're likely going to die from your brain smashing into the front of your skull -- no helmet will help with that. If you, say, low side, due to slippery roads, you only have to survive the impact of the distance from your upright position on the bike to the ground -- only a few feet. It's the same reason why it's a good idea to wear a helmet if you ride a bicycle -- that distance CAN cause a head injury. Where it gets dicey NOT having a helmet in that case, is your face dragging along the pavement for a hundred feet or so. Seeing the aftermath of which WILL make you wear a fullface helmet forever.

I guess I mean when some asshole is gonna cut you off and you high side. Laying a bike down low side is different. Leather helps there, but highway speeds aren't good to lay down a bike.

You could say similar things about cars - if you're going to be hit by a transport truck, then a seatbelt and an airbag might not help you. But that's no reason not to use them.

This brings up a thought....
Clearly going down at 70 with no helmet is most likely going to kill you. And wearing a helmet in that situation is still no guarantee. Let's say somebody goes down at that speed with a helmet on and lives....what's that quality of life likely going to be? Maybe you're better off dead at that point. I don't know....

Open or closed casket. Your choice.

Yeah, I still have my licence, but I lost interest after becoming a parent. Wasn't really a conscious decision, just realized one day that my bike had just been taking up space for two years. My oldest is 10 now.

IDK. Maybe I'll buy a WW2-era BMW with sidecar and drive my dog around. Dog would love it.

I sold my last motorcycle just before my son was born. I miss riding itself, but not riding around cars.

I was still in the fire department and EMS in those days and saw the results of helmetless riders all too often.

This. Every time I hear a Harley rider say "loud pipes save lives" I want to scream "No you moron, helmets and gear save lives - loud pipes only annoy everyone except the drivers in the cars that have the windows up, radio blaring, and are texting."

If any of you think that helmets and gear don't improve rider safety under every riding condition, you are fooling yourselves. All the gear, all the time.

I don't think anyone legitimately thinks that....they just think 'it'll never happen to me'
