Cobain - Thoughts?

Preferably discussion, not flames. Do you appreciate what he did? Hate it? Talent as a player, songwriter, or none?

I personally like a lot of his songs, really like his vocals, and enjoy his playing in context. Sure others could play his stuff better, but he wrote it. Grohl reportedly held songs back from Nirvana because he was "in awe" of his frontman's songs. Or so wiki says.

So what do you guys think?

Great writer. His voice was perfect for his music, and his playing worked for it as well. He died an unnecessary fools death though.

His Legend status is a bit much. And they started trying to make that legend status way too soon. It's like MTV wanted so bad to have the next Jimi Hendrix that they started paving that road the very hour he was found dead and it sickened me.

However; I really do like his stuff, always have, and it was, (in it's own way) perfect and original.

While I recognize and respect the talented songwriter he was, I never was able to connect with his music (or any of the alternative stuff, really)...

......

I kind of "missed" Nirvana and never actively tried to find it, so I know next to nothing about Kurt except for the attempt to deify him.

Liked a large portion of his music. I don't believe he was the most talented member in his band, but I think he had the tools needed to put everything together in a way that fundamentally changed pop rock music. For that, he is iconic and will forever be deified (perhaps justifiably).

I never liked him, to be honest.

Not a flame, but an honest opinion.

I thought Nirvana tried too hard to be "anti-social" or "anti-establishment".
To ME, it just seemed like a more depressing version of the 70's punk scene.

I have never heard a "happy" or "kick-ass" song by Nirvana.
The lyrics all just seemed like miserable, self-pitying, heroin-laden, teen angst.

Their music was sloppy. His guitar playing was (IMHO) average at best.

Then he killed himself.

I really have very little respect for his music, and even less for the man.

Only so much of the "Look at me, I'm a miserable heroin-addicted millionaire. I'm so misunderstood. Woe unto me." bullshit I can take.

Oh, did I mention he killed himself and left behind a wife and infant?

:annoyed:

I turn off Nirvana when it comes on the radio.

"I want to eat your cancer when you die."

Super. :annoyed:

I'm sorry, Is the above a flame?

I liked Nirvana at the time they broke onto the nation radar, especially considering that altrock bands weren't getting much air play outside of college radio or 120 minutes on MTV & things were fairly stagnant at the mainstream level. IDK, people seemed to identify with the tragically broken rockstar image and attached a piece of their own fucked up lives to his identity. I can't say that I ever really go back and listen to any of the albums but if it's one the radio or whatever, I'll leave it on.

Who'd have thought that out of the three, the drummer would be the only one to survive that band and actually go on the thrive as a musician and deliver some solid rock for years to come?

I'm a fan of Nirvana, and I guess Cobain. I think the big key of Nirvana was not that they were exceptional musicians, or wrote exceptional songs, but rather that they were the anti-glam metal sound. I remember when they first made it big, top hits were crap hair metal like Poison and such. Nirvana was a breath of fresh, or at least different, air. They pretty much changed popular music. Cobain gets a lot of credit for all of this, and has obtained cult status, but I think it was a collective effort...and I prefer Dave Grohl's post Nirvana stuff as much, or more, than the original Nirvana tracks.

His music seemed to stand out against the sea of hair metal at the time. I look back at his songs and it minds me of lyrics that I wrote in back in '88 for my high school band:
"we may seem bizarre and a little bit obscene, but ten years from now we'll be main stream. Twenty years from now your kids will think we're shit, and you'll consider this song a classic hit."

...and I like the drummer better.

I honestly think he was the talent in Nirvana. Grohl is a great and far better musician "Technically" but Cobain had that individuality and hiis writing , playing and vocals are what made the band.

Mudhoney were better though

He isOK to me - I don't go out listening to him on purpose but I don't turn him off when I hear him.

I lost a little respect after his death when "Rolling Stone" magazine proclaimed him as one of the best guitarists of all time.

Yeah but you can't really hold that against him He was dead already and didn't make them vote that way :embarrassed:. Why not direct your hate toward RS ?

fwiw I'm no Nivana fanboi but they were a big band at the time and I listened to them a lot at the time. I haven't given them much thought at all since he died though and probably the only time I listened to them since then was when that box set came out around 2001.

No, not a flame. Just your opinion, which is what I wanted. what I meant by a flame was something like "Cobain F#$%^ING SH&* SPAWN OF S()*&N" That kind of stuff like you see on other forums. Perfectly fine to disagree and discuss. I appreciate your opinion. He was overly dark, had a lot of trouble in his personal life, and I would not want my 6th grade son emulating his life in any way. Fair points to be sure. His life ultimately led to a "fools death" as DenverDave pointed out.

But his writing, singing and raw expressiveness were very talented in my opinion. Someone had to say some of the stuff he was saying back then IMHO. I do wish he could have pulled out of his final dive though. Oh, the deification was strange too (starting immediately after he died like Knox points out) and is really kind of ironic too.

Ok, I can concur with that. I was watching Foo Fighters on Austin City Limits last night and was wondering why, when Grohl is really so good, FF stuff doesn't seem as original or grip me as much. Grohl can howl just fine, and in key mostly. But . . . .
