Applying grain filler to the neck.

Hmm. Here's the headstock after a coat of clear lacquer. This face plate I used on the headstock was fairly smooth. It didn't take a whole lot of filler.

Question

Working on the filler, I've gotten through the stain in a few places. No biggie, I just hit it with a dab of rust juice and its black again.

These two little spots, I'm tempted to leave. What do you think?

I hit the spots. The seam is stubborn. Problem is, any trace at all looks the same as a big clog. It ALL has to come out or you might as well leave it.

Here's the back with a coat of Watco gloss clear lacquer.

That's an interesting look with the clear coat.
I suspect the rust from the wood is leeching into the grain filler. I think it's going to turn orange.

Unhappy with the faded look of my grain fill after clear coat, I'm taking a different approach. I've done this before and I know it works. I mixed a white powdered dye into some blonde shellac and painted the bitch white. When this dries, I can sand it back off the flat surfaces and leave only what's in the grain. With a coat of lacquer on the shellac should bind well and not pull out of the pores. Plus, the lacquer barrier I hope will keep this from getting rust stained.

It looks funny now. :)

Dip it in a bucket of poly, and call it a day.

The neck definitely looks better. No lacquer on it yet, but it's a nice improvement already.
I kinda dig that ivory color. May need to use that one on a whole guitar one day.
