The Official 2013 NFL Football Thread

Master of the Meh
OK, it is Sunday, September 1, 2013. The NFL Season officially kicks off in 4 days. It's time for the Homers to honk their teams, the prognosticators to prognosticate, the trash talkers to talk trash, The doubters to doubt, the haters to hate, the hopeful to be hopeful before eventually having their dreams crushed (read: Broncos fans), the apathetic to profess their apathy...

So let's have at it. It is time to chime in football fans, who are you cheering for? Who will go to the Super Bowl? Who will ultimately disappoint or surprise their fans?

As an unfortunate SD Chargers fan myself, allow me to enter my predictions for this season: They will be better than last year. How much better, is yet to be seen. Now that the Cancer known as AJ Smith has finally been removed, the new GM and coaching staff will have the first real opportunity to work TOGETHER in building a solid team here in nearly 2 decades. Philip Rivers got some much needed blind side protection over the off season, and now he can hopefully return to form without running for his life after every snap. Injuries have already taken a huge toll, but there should be enough depth to get the season rolling in the right direction. Based on the schedule, the Chargers SHOULD go at least 9-7, but the potential is there for them to do as well as 12-4. Split the difference at 10-6 or 11-5 and I think that is very doable.

The rest of the AFC West:

Raiders: They still suck, they might suck less, but suck is suck, and that's just what suckers do... suck. They will go 6-10.

Chiefs: Mixed bag of uncertainty. Hard to imagine they can do much better than 6 wins themselves. I see them likely going 5-11.

Broncos: Does Manning still have the magic? Can they protect him? Do they have the roster depth? Setting aside my personal dislike for the Broncos, I don't see them as being all too formidable this year. The division WILL go to either Denver or SD. I still think Payton is one big hit away from forced retirement, and if he goes down, so do the Broncos. Looking at their schedule, I see them going 11-5 at best, and that is only IF Manning stays sharp and healthy. Realistically, they look more like a 9-7 team.

What say the Weiners?

Well, I am a Seahawks fan. They were born when I was living in Tacoma and was in about 8th grade. Have been a fan ever since, though I cooled for a couple/few years after Ken Behring purchased them from the Nordstrom family. I did not like the direction he tried to take them in. Used to be all about AFC west rivalries such as Raiders, Broncos, KC. But it is all different now with them being in the NFC west. The biggest rivalry now is with the 49'ers. But the conference has a lot of tough teams. I am surprised by the vitriol of the commentary between certain Seahawk and 49'er fans. But I guess internet decorum does not improve after you have been swilling beer watching a football game.

I like the new look of the team, love the new stadium, like Wilson a lot, and am really hopeful for the year. I am not one to promise that this is Seattle's year (I remember too well the heartbreak of the 2006 championship game http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5444048), but I do hope for it to be a fun one where we should see some good games.

I'm a life long Vikings fan so I know what it's like to be truly disappointed. I'm sure this year will be no different. They are pinning their year on Christian Ponder. He's horribly inconsistent. If Peterson has another record year they may go to the playoffs but have no chance until they have a good QB.

I miss having the Seahawks in the AFC West. I'll never understand the move to the NFC.
I don't either. That happened during the period when I had tuned them out for a while after Behring, after having young kids, and moving to Idaho. I do feel that though I enjoy watching some games now, it is healthier that I tend to go for a mountain bike ride or something most Sundays rather than build the day around watching the Seahawks like I used to. But I have enjoyed following them since the mid '00s, and was particularly excited last year and this.

Not really sure what to expect though, given the turnover in the coaching staff and the Urlacher thing. Hopefully the defense can surpass (or at least equal) last years' performance and the offense can hold up some of the promise they've shown in preseason.

We will see.

Here is one more reason why I have remained a fan:

That is me in front, as a Ninth grader at Bellarmine Prep football camp. To the right is Jim Zorn, the first Seahawk QB, to the left is hall of famer Steve Largent, and directly behind me is my favorite of the three, tight end Ron Howard .

Those guys took some real time with us, and I always respected the three of them. I did not have much interaction with Zorn, and got yelled at (not in a bad way, just football camp way), by Steve Largent. But Mr. Howard took the time to see me, a 165 pound 9th grader, trying to carry a large upper classman on my back during drills for defensive line as I had thought I would play, and pull me over and teach me some routes, and how to be a receiver/tight end with some quiet encouragement. I did not end up getting to play that position ultimately, and my high school football career did not go the distance, but I sure appreciated his effort. He was a class act. I've never forgotten that experience with these pros at that camp. So there is one more reason I am a "Homer honking his team."

I have backed off a bit in my personal dislike for Cutler since he seems to be maturing and I thought he did a great job in that tv commercial with the NFL gear :-D

But, I still don't think he has enough ability to "carry" a team when the need arises. I like the Bears, but there are too many marquee QB's in the NFC for them to go deep into the playoffs.

I agree. I also think he lacks game-management skills to a pretty significant degree. Also, it doesn't matter what your arm or anything else is capable of if the o-line can't keep you from getting knocked down 4-5 times (or more) a game. I don't really have any doubts about the capability of the defense to keep the games interesting, but I'm not sure if Cutler's got what it takes to make the other half of the game any fun.

Philadelphia Eagles fan, and we're gonna suck (again).

Though we will probably do better than we did last year, but not by too much.....

I would be pretty happy with an 8-8 record (which is about where I think we will be.....).

Redskins are going to be the ones to watch out for this year, with the Giants a close second in our division.

My predictions:

Redskins 10-6
Giants 9-7
Eagles 8-8
Cowboys 4-12

You are giving the Cowboys an awful lot of credit...

Another Bears fan here. Always will be no matter how much they suck. I am hopeful this year. O line is such a huge improvement, and more than one guy to throw the ball to sounds like a good idea.

If anything I worry about the defense without Urlacher. Not that he did much his last couple of years but, when he was injured, and not there, everybody else on the field was clueless, lost.

As long as it isn't against the Bears, I love watching Adrian Peterson run over people. I love the running game in general/ think pass, after pass is boring. Weird the Vikings haven't came up with a better quarterback by now. 49rs is another good team to watch play real football.

Pats, Pats, Pats, Pats

What more is there to say?

We do have a new WR crew including TE's. We shall see how Gronk fairs his injuries and in the post Welker era, Amendola will do great! We have a few rookies there too at WR and they have proven themselves in preseason and will do the same in the regular season. For all the Brady haters, you cannot deny his accuracy. As long as you receivers can catch, the Pats will pound you on the ground as well as fly through the air.

On defense the front is solid and our secondary has improved. We should take the division again but want the big one. The Ravens took away our chances last year of seeing Manning in the title game but this we shall be in the AFC title game moving onto the big dance.

As for Tebow, I would have loved to see him play other positions than just QB. Had his passing arm been there for the most part, he would have made a great option in other positions much like how Julian Edelman is. After Edelman is a former QB.

I'm a Steelers fan but they will likely be horrible this year. I think probably the worse they have been in the Tomlin era. The O line can't block for Ben and their rookie RB savoiour is on the DL.
Denver should be the best team in the AFC but watch out for the Bengals (as much as it pains me to say that). The D is very good and they have weapons on offence. I don't see the Ravens doing a repeat of last year and I never count out the Pats.
The '9ers and the Hawks I see beating the living crap out of each other and the rest of the NFC which might leave some opening for someone (maybe Atlanta ) that doesnt have a difficult a schedule to take the NFC...not that it helped last year

injuries will play the biggest factor as always especially with so many teams going to 2 QB's

I like the Bears well enough. I so hope the Seahawks are ready for the 49'ers on the 15th. They came close in SF and then put the hurt on them in Seattle last year, but no one besides Seahawk fans seemed to care. I am hopeful for this year but recognize SF is a solid program and will likely remember being defeated late last year.

My predictions:

Redskins 10-6
Giants 9-7

I hope you are right. I am hoping last year wasn't a fluke for the skins, but a 7-0 run at the end is kinda flukey.

I am going Seahawks or Packers vs Broncos in the Super Bowl.

Lotta Bronco love already in this thread.

I just don't see it. Even IF they manage to win their weak division, there are several AFC teams that could outclass them in the play offs.
