Official MWGL Stoopid Dealz of the Day Thread!....

I don't know about you, but when I think of quality, subtly-styled acoustic guitars Dean is the first name to pop out of my mouth...
Dean guitars has an interesting history. Zelinsky started the company as a teenager and was selling custom guitars to stadium-filling rock icons. Now they're basically considered entry-level instruments. The wheels must have really come of somewhere along the way.

It's almost like when a brand has notoriety and a bunch of suits buy the brand, the inspired creator of the brand leaves, and the suits continue to run the brand like a dollar general...

... somehow that doesn't create the best products. Huh... who would have thunk it?

Walmart Strat copy $8.88. Seems pretty stoopid.

I love my MIK Dean Paramount basses that I bought new for $250. But why did I get them new for $250? Because nobody trusted Dean to make a good bass at $500, which was still an incredibly low price for a nice MIK instrument.

$100 off a Gator Les Paul plastic case with TSA locks is a hell of a deal. But I don’t travel and I have the Gibson case that came with my Les Paul so I reluctantly pass.

I had one of those cases - almost bulletproof.

I have one and it’s a great bass for a silly price.

Okay.... I have to cut MF some slack. I still hate them for killing Woodwind and Brasswind and for turning the guitar centers into cookie-cutter Walmart-for-Musicians...

... but there are definitely people who work there who are good guys. I know a guy that has worked at Guitar Center (since they closed WW&BW on him) and he's super cool... and this guy Tristen who helped me out with a return tag for the Traveler guitar (won't stay in tune for shit) and we had a nice conversation about the music scene in Nashville.

UPS however is on my shit list. They closed the customer counter at the hub that was a few miles from my house.... then I spent my entire lunch hour driving up to the one at the airport... and they CLOSED THAT ONE TOO!!! Basically you have to get your labels online or get them packed at a UPS store and then find a UPS drop off. :annoyed:

They are part of Armadillo Enterprises. From what I know about them, they like to suck the soul out of a company and just try to make money. They basically pushed Yvonne DeVilliers out of Luna Guitars, the company she founded. I don't think the quality of the guitars changed much, but Luna no longer has the heart that made them special.

That's too bad, but.....

In fairness to Guitar Center they’re much better under the new CEO. Instead of a store of beginner gear there’s lots of high end stuff right out on the floor where you can play it. My understanding is that most of the stores now resemble the stores they used to only have in wealthy towns like the Scottsdale store. The drawback is that if you need a practice amp they might not have anything in stock; when I bought my Ampeg bass amp last week I had to go mail order because everything they had in stock was high end.

That was the thing I appreciated about the ones around the Midwest… small towns would have the typical Ibanez and such, but I would go to Chicago or Kalamazoo and find cool PRS and used stuff.

The last 5 or 10 years if someone dropped you in a random guitar center it was like being dropped in a random shopping center best buy. :annoyed:

Squire Classic Vibe Bass... killer looking for $349
