Not really. It's not as though most athletes can compete in 9 similar events. Nor that all athletes compete in individual sports. Nor have professional athletes been able to compete through most of Olympic history.

At one point, Sugar Ray Robinson had a professional record of 171 wins, 1 loss, and 2 draws. That one loss was from Jake Lamotta, whom he beat 5 other times.
This was at time when boxing was one of the most popular sports in existence. And Robinson lost some time during WW2.

Bo was a great athlete, but he wasn't the best in world at football or baseball. Same for Deon Sanders. Both amazing.

I think were are taking this from 2 different angles. Your comment about 9 similar events show it. He is at the top of many events in swimming and has been since 2004. Nobody in swimming has come close to what he has accomplished and they are in the same sport. Also track and field, or skiing. There are many Olympic sports that are "similar"
I'm not saying he is the greatest athlete, I am saying he has dominated in his sport like nobody else has done. There may be some boxers have been there.

That is usually what dominant means. You dominate your sport. Bo didn't dominate baseball or football, he isn't in either sports hall of fame. He clearly was an amazing athlete, one of the best of all time.

If they'd had events for 10, 20, and 30 minute events in addition to the standard 40 minutes for basketball, and if professionals were allowed to compete, then Bill Russell would almost certainly have a dozen medals over his career, in addition to his pro record.

They should all be able to win 20+ gold medals. Mark Sptiz has 9. that is the closest. 22 to 9. If that is dominating, I'm not sure what is. Mark Spitz was considered the best swimmer ever until Phelps came along and he more than doubled his gold medal count.
Bill Russell played for 14 years. At most he would have had 3 gold medals

I think swimming requires athleticism, but I've known people who were very good swimmers who couldn't throw a baseball to save their life, because they spent all their time swimming.
To be the worlds most dominate athlete, I think you need to be more than a one trick pony.

I usually really enjoy living on the West Coast, but fucking NBC deciding that the need to fucking delay every fucking event so that they can fucking fit it in their fucking prime time slot is fucked. Why do we have to wait AT LEAST three hours after every fucking event for it to be broadcast? So, every time I watch the fucking news I get fucking spoilers of all the fucking events I won't even be able to fucking see until after my fucking bedtime...

Yes, because it's one event.
I'm not contesting Phelps being the most dominant swimmer of all time. I'm just saying that if the argument is 'most dominant athlete of all-time', then looking solely at Olympic medals is seriously skewed, especially for swimmers.

Yeah 2 different things. I consider dominating, someone who can't be beat, or wins all the time. A quick google search shows most dominant athlete lists think the same way I do. A one sport person who dominates their sport. I will concede that maybe Serena Williams is the most dominant athlete.

Maybe I could have stated my statement better. And really, it isn't just Olympics for him, he has won his whole career in Pan Am games and other world competitions. It may have been better to say, nobody has dominated their sport like Phelps has. 12 years on top, going to your first Olympics at 15. The only one I can think of that maybe more dominant than him is Serena.
