Yesterday's RS-25 Test

We tested a smaller engine for TRW years back. They were test fired horizontally, with the flame shooting above the ground. This was done at the E Stand. This was the first test stand I worked on.

They cleared back the trees over 100 yards. Still set the woods on fire.

That reminds me of when I worked at Lockheed and was working up at the Navy site in Bonny Doon. They had an outdoor test stand for prototype engine development, and every time they tested, it set the hillside on fire. The stand was built to blow up into specific pieces that could easily be rebuilt. The guys there told me it took a few explosions to figure that part out.

We call an engine failure an RUD (you know how Nasa loves their acronyms) for "Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly"
