why do you play an acoustic

It strips it down simple, yet it is complex in a different way. You do not depend on stomp boxes to cover up a crappy sound or to try and make you sustain etc. you have to make the sounds and extras yourself. It in a way is a mastering tool, at least in my eyes. I know some guys hate them because the action is a half inch of the frets, but my acoustic plays as easy as as any electric and is a joy to play. This makes it easy not to get tired or sore playing and makes it easy to jam and enjoy it. Mine has internal electronics and I would rather mic it as to me it sounds more natural that way. It makes you learn things that when you go back to playing an electric, you don't need near as many effects as you thought you did.

Haha, well you can disagree all you want, but the presence or absence of an acoustic guitar is an objective fact easily verified. There are whole subgenres of "today's music" where it's rare to ever hear a guitar, electric or acoustic.

In fact, in genres like dubstep or electronica (whether you like them or not, it's really not debatable that they are part of "today's music," to quote you) it's quite common for an entire song to be constructed on computer, without the use of ANY traditional musical instruments, acoustic or electric. My son just turned 16 and does it all the time:

I play acoustic because of (in no particular order) The Beatles, Leo Kottke, Steve Stills, Doc Watson, The Eagles, Neil Young, Elvis, John Fahey, Mason Williams, Eric Johnson, The Doobie Brothers, Chet Atkins and Elizabeth Cotten.
 
While I owned a couple and would play them on and off for many years, I never really became a fan of them until 3 years ago. With the desire to do solo work, I found my Ovation neck lifting from the body. Took it to a repair guy and boom the guitar plays better than ever. It always had a great sound but the action was crap even after removing the risers under the bridge. Having the instrument properly set made it a joy to play my acoustic. As comparison to my electric, I can do most things on my acoustic for practicing with the exception of playing distorted rock. Outside of that, I love it.

Find one, pops. Look up "music." Srsly. It won't say "some grandpa in 'Tejas' gets to exclude from that definition everything that's happened in the last 50 years."

But at some point, when you purport to unilaterally decree that everything that doesn't comport with an aesthetic that clearly became concrete in the last century is not "music,' you're just feeding into ageist stereotypes. To say nothing of being either incredibly ignorant, or a dick. I don't know you, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and ascribe your opinion to ignorance.

I'm an old man. I know that what I like best may not be what's going on in music today. But that doesn't mean it's not music.

That's exactly what I was thinking. If I break out the acoustic late at night the upstairs neighbors will be pissed.
It's one of the drabacks of appartment living.
