Question: Who is into martial arts here?

I'm going to Wang Chung tonight......... I can't believe this thread got this far without anyone saying it.

I went to Karate classes in my teens at the typical strip mall Americanised Karate school. I got more seriously interested in martial arts around 20 and studied Wing Chung and Qi Gung. I wanted to do some kick boxing so I also studied Muay Thai at a little studio that opened up in an area where a lot of Asian immigrants settled. I didn't know at the time how big a deal Muay Thai was in their countries and some of these guys had been studying since they were little kids. I went there and got the shit kicked out of me weekly for about a year.

I don't know if he still is but, my nephew was the world champ Muay Thai in his weight class.

Studied aikido for a bit back in the 90's, got a blue belt in kenpo last year but then the school shut down. Looking at taking the kids to krav maga/ muay thai school this year.

I wish MMA was around back when I was young. My idol was Dennis Alexio. Full Contact (kick boxing) was the big deal. When UFC 1 happened I was totally hooked. Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock were both great fighters. I've been following the sport ever since. There are a couple Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu places down in the cities that are really good. I have thought about going back but at my age I don't know if I could physically take getting my ass kicked on a regular basis anymore.

Studied for several years when I live in CT, a style that my instructor had developed - a blend of Tang Soo Do, Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and Boxing. Made it to the rank of apprentice black belt, moved to KY before I was eligible to test for black. About a year ago I took some classes at a Shorin Ryu dojo locally, but they were far to concerned with testing and rank and not enough with technique, so I left. My sign up at a local MMA school in the future...

I had my son study Tae Kwon Do. He was about a year to 1.5 years from becoming a 1st degree BB when he stopped.

Me, I wanted to learn when I was young. But as all families that struggled to make ends meet, no funds to do so. I did learn some moves while my son was studying but have since, somewhat forgotten.

studied kung foogle for years, picked up some kabooti and a little karataoke but have taken a calmer hiatus.
