Question: Which katana?

Poor old Geordie's array...
For jamming in the house.

Im thinking the 100 watt combo is going to be too loud so probably 50 watt combo or the air?

Local shop has an air which looks pretty cool but not sure the price difference merits it.

Any thoughts?
 
its a solid state amp so you dont have to turn it up loud to get good sounds.

i would get the 100 watt head so i could take it to gigs as a backup.

I don't remember if my neighbor has the 50 or 100 watt, but it does sound better when you crank it. Not like a 15 watt tube amp sounds better when you crank it, but it does sound better cranked.

I've not gigged in a million years and don't have any plans to. The main reason I fancy this is because I've got 3 really nice electrics I never touch because the tube amps I have are too loud.

I take it the 50 is easier to push than the 100?

Why not get an attenuator for the tube amps?
 
Size, portability and the fact I'd need to dig out the million old pedals and that's a rabbit hole I wish to avoid
 
Doesn’t the 100 watt head have small speakers in it for jamming at home? Also, wasn’t the 100 watt easier to access the hidden features? Is it also possible that I don’t remember shit about shit and made all this up?

When you said you had no plans for gigging, I would think size and portability wouldn't matter. I've played with my neighbor's Katana and while the amp sounds good, I felt the effects weren't very good sounding and accessing them isn't the most user friendly system I've seen. You also don't have much control over them unless you hook it to a computer. If I had one, I'd still use pedals but that's just me.
 
I messed with a Katana 50w.
It sounded good,but not an amp for me.
Too many fiddly bits.

For home playing I'd look into a Fender Super Champ XD.
A Vibro Champ XD might be worth a look too.
 
the speaker in the 100 watt head really sucks.

get the air then unless you play super loud at home because even a 50 watt solid state amp would be pretty loud cranked.
 
I've had the 50w combo and now the 100w head (just sold the 50). IMHO if you have a decent cab, the 100w head is the way to go with its internal speaker, and selectable 0.5w / 50w / 100w output. The 50 is no slouch, though.
 
I've got the 100 watt combo. I love the thing. It sounds great and it is super easy to dial in good sounds. I haven't turned on my tube amps in 6 months. The only thing missing is an onboard tuner.
 
The 50 is the bee's knees.

I love mine. The new V3.0 Firmware is amazing.
 
If you're worried about size and weight, just get the 1x12 instead of the 2x12.... it's only $40 more than the 50 watter.

Plus I would still get the 100watt because IMO 100watts solid state is the equivalent of 25-35 watts tube because you turn up a tube amp to the point of pushing hard they just sag, compress, and sound better. Solid state starts to strain and clip when pushing the edge of headroom.

I’ve had 2 that are louder. My old Mesa Mark I was louder than my brother in laws JC 120 (those are the amps we used when we were in a band together) and my Mig is louder than my Mesa was.
 
jc120s are loud, but there are lotsa loud amps, plenty with tubes. those silly marshall majors, hiwatt dr201, etc. 100 watt plexis, fender twins, ampeg v4s are louder IME as well.

wattage ratings are overall kinda silly anyway, as everyone uses them differently (peak vs mean, etc), and speaker efficiency is a bigger factor in volume anyway.
