I'm not sure why, but there seems to be a proliferation of butt hurt around here, and it just keeps getting worse...more and more threads are devolving into pissing matches between members with undefined issues with each other that tend to drag innocent bystanders into the arguments...

In one thread yesterday a long time member, who seems to be a lightning rod for conflict, stated that this place used to be a refuge, a sanctuary from the drama that infects other forums, but is that way no more, and he could not be more correct...this used to be a close knit community where people with a shared interest in music and the making of music could interact and even get to know each other beyond that shared interest without passing judgement on their other qualities...those days appear to be behind us...

If you go back a few years and read through some old threads you will find an untold number of people who no longer post here, or at least post sporadically...admittedly many of them stopped posting for reasons with nothing to do with the butt hurt drama that infects this forum now, but no one can accurately quantify what percentage left for other reasons and what percentage left due to the insults and drama that was inflicted on them...

What changed here to cause this? I have a theory...it is only a theory, but as a long time member here I truly believe that I can pinpoint the moment when things changed...

The political thread...

Before the forum rules on religion and politics were relaxed the instances of butt hurt were few and far between, but since then it seems to me that peoples' opinions of each other have been irrevocably altered, and in some instance poisoned, by that thread...to take it a step farther, there are more and more instances where politics and the disagreement it causes finds it's way into threads that have nothing to do with politics or political discussion...

I can pinpoint one long time and prolific member who left here specifically due to the political differences he has with the majority of the forum...but in addition to the political differences he was also subject to an alarming amount of bigoted judgement and insults that were based on nothing more than the state he was born and raised in...

Believe me, I do not exclude myself from this...I decided to stop regular posting in the political thread because it was starting to color my opinions of, and feelings for, other forumites who have become true and dear friends of mine in real life...add to this the fact that very single forumite it has been my honor and pleasure to meet IN REAL LIFE have all been amazing people, and people whom it is my honor to consider friends...

The most alarming part of all of this is how little regard some member hold for our founder and host @Mark Wein ...this is HIS forum, and was originally intended as a tool for publicizing his music studio...as far as I know that is still the primary reason this forum exists...yet some member seem to take no issue with trampling on his work, and take no issue with how their actions reflect on him...common courtesy and common decency have been seriously lacking...

So...I understand that making a post of this nature without offering some kind of solution is bad form, and I have a suggestion...

The Xenforo software has provision for limited access sub forums which are invisible to internet searches and inaccessible to members who have not requested and been granted access...perhaps create a sub forum for the purpose of unlimited trolling and political discussion...

Either that or we all start adhering to the tag line attached to the Lounge and start abandoning all mope...I wonder if that is even possible anymore...
 
When I started reading the OP the first thing that popped into my head was The Political thread.

People get mean and nasty when you disagree with their political views.
 
Why can't people who get their jimmies rustled by that politics thread just stay the hell away from it?

Edit: ....but I think this post is really more about a specific grievance than that thread anyway.

Strong disagree here. I feel that the political thread has contained a lot of the animosity that used to be omnipresent.

We've lost really terrific, valuable, nice guy, contributing members - Doug Kauer, Matt Burnside, and Oscar Jordan all spring to mind - for reasons that had absolutely nothing to do with politics, and everything to do with petty behaviour and drama queen personalities.

If people can't behave in a civil fashion, or who lack the self-control to avoid the political thread altogether, or who lurk silently in the political thread but who lack the ability to respect the feelings of the vast majority of forumites here, including the forum's owner and its administrators - good riddance. They were the exact same people who were just subtle enough to slide homophobic or misogynistic bullshit under the table for years.
 
I Think I briefly looked in the political thread once...dont post there...I dont throw my pearls before swine or waste my time trying to reason with beliefs that simply are not amenable to reason

When I first discovered this forum a little over a year ago the first thing I noticed is that this is much more of a community than damn near any other forum I've visited. Some forums out there are just plain assholes to each other.
Sure there are arguments here...I've argued with some people here but even though, I still have a like and respect for everyone here. There is not one person on this forum that I don't like.
That doesn't mean that I agree with everything I read here, because I don't. That's why I seldom visit the politics thread. I will admit that I was very surprised that there was a political thread here...off the top of my head I can't think of a single other music related forum that has one.
But one think I 100% agree with from Jelloman's OP....this is Mark's forum primarily for his music business....for that reason alone this place deserves more respect from us all.
Mark let's a LOT slide that would never be allowed elsewhere.

Actually I haven't seen a whole lot of drama In the political thread. It's mostly uniform bitching about the curent gummint, rather than debate.

I do think they the resulting pervading negativity and outrage in society in general has begun bleeding into everything we do on a daily basis. Civility is a rare thing nowadays.

I tend to agree with Rock and flamencoman - people come and go and the most noticeable ones who have left tended to bring the drama upon them all by themselves.

It's not gonna be sunshine and lollipops all the time. We're a crusty lot and that's inevitably going to show through now and then.
