They've recently announced that they moved his Philadelphia show on the 29th from the Mann to the Electric Factory. The EF is shitty. Last time though he played the Keswick, a nice theater w/ really good sound. I'd love to see him there again.

So what do you guys think? I've only listened a couple of times, and overall I like it. He's probably in my top 3 modern songwriters. His mastery of imagery in lyrics is top notch. I have to admit though, I prefer a little more of his amped-up electric type stuff, so this album is a bit too acoustic for me. Southeastern had more of a balance, IMO. For a folksy, acoustic type album though, it is quite good and I do like it.
This might be the day when @Kerouac puts me on his "ignore" list.

Well, like the comic describes, some of us prefer the "sad bastard" songs, but it's still a really good album. It's hard for me to compare to Southeastern, because that's an album I know each and every note of, backward and forward; with the exception of "Super 8" and "Songs That She Sang In The Shower" I've covered the rest of them in my solo sets; it made the leap onto my list of all-time favourite albums, so everything before and after is going to have a hard time measuring up.
One big difference I've noticed compared to the critics is I actually prefer sides Three and Four. I listen to One and Two in the car, but at home I pretty much spend my time flipping the record over and just repeating the sequence. My favourite songs on the album are (in order):
Palmetto Rose
24 Frames
Something More Than Free
To A Band That I Loved
Speed Trap Town
The song that seemingly all critics have given a glowing review to is "Children of Children" which I can say is definitely my least favourite song on the album; it's certainly well-crafted and I really like the production and arrangement, but that song doesn't have any impact on me, unlike the rest of the songs that are eagworms. That's how I feel about "Songs That She Sang In The Shower" as well- really good song, but not "my" song.

I think no matter how good this record is, it is too hard to follow Southeastern. I think the same can be said for the last Foo Fighters and Bob Mould discs. Wasting Light and Silver Age were both outstanding discs that were hard to follow. That being said, I think the songs on Something More than Free are really good, but he is going a little too far in the country direction for me. While Southeastern had a bunch of acoustic tunes, they didn't really feel country to me but this one has a bunch of songs that would be right at home on the country station my grandparents listened to when I was a kid. And when I say country, I don't mean the crappy country music about my big green tractor my mom listens to. I have to give it a few more listens, had Wilco not dropped a record the same day, I probably would have given it a few more by now, but I really like the new Wilco so that has been my go to.

I've only started listening to the Wilco one over the last few days. Like Something More Than Free, I think the back half of the album is a lot stronger than the first. It's still no A Ghost Is Born.

I like it much more than Wilco and the Whole Love although it has been a while since I have listened to those.

I think The Whole Love is great. Wilco has quite a few songs on it I really like, most of all "One Wing." My biggest issue with Star Wars is too much vocal distortion and lo-fi production. Songs are really good but I don't enjoy the listen as much. So far my favorites are "Taste The Ceiling", "Cold Slope", and "Magnetized."

Absolutely. Doesn't go quite as well for a folk band though, and that's why I haven't learned it.

One Wing is a great song. I kinda dig the lo-fi production with these songs. I can't get Random Bame Generator out of my head. For some reason it reminds me of I'm a Wheel.

Super 8 is a decent song, but I can't help but think it was put there to be a token 'bro country' friendly song that a new country station could play without making the rednecks brains hurt thinking too much. I could be wrong.

When @jaxn slim and I saw him at the Ryman he said he wanted to write a song that sounded like something the Rolling Stones would have done in the '70s. Considering Isbell used to cover "Can You Hear Me Knockin'" it makes complete sense.
