...where making one equates to buying a regular gas operated car and driving it for 8 years. I looked up a couple articles to find more and yes. It's really quite bad. We're fucked.
 
Electric vehicles are far better for the environment than gas-powered vehicles. Furthermore, they reduce our dependence on foreign sources of energy.

To get a finished electric vehicle on the lot to sell it's worse for the environment than buying a gas powered vehicle and driving it for 8 years. The damage is done before it's even bought.

That’s no longer necessarily true, especially with some of the efforts in China to clean up the battery industry.

At this point the environmental impact of EV production and ICE production is considered relatively on par.

Edit: Plus those batteries can be recycled and repurposed
 
And I'm sure that many of the makers of internal combustion engined cars as well as gas and oil manufacturers enjoy when the old state-of-the-ev-market articles and reports circulate, regardless of any updates or changes that have happened in production efficiency, materials, and recycling old vehicles.

Ummm, guess you didn't get the original point. The impact to the environment in making one, disposing of batteries, etc. How much fossil fuel was required in the manufacturing of those vehicles? You realize that electricity is still generated by coal in many places in this country and around the world?

I love this stuff.

In autumn 2007, I bought a 65ish year old house equipped with a typical forced air oil furnace. Man that was expensive to heat that winter...and I wasn't even warm after my first furnace oil bill.

In June 2008 I had a ducted heat pump installed. At that time everyone would say "what's a heat pump?". Heat pumps are refrigeration units which transfer heat and, in winters which reach any significant cold, they would likely have a hard time collecting the heat as fast as your house could lose it. That is why insulation and air sealing are important for any home with a heat pump.

In September 2008 I started insulating and air sealing the basement and the header area ( generally where the concrete and wood come together). I finished my insulating job when I used one of those blowers to put 50 bags of cellulose insulation into the attic. I did not work on my main walls because it would be very intensive and expensive (not that what I did was cheap - ok, the attic part was). The main walls were insulated as well as having a couple of layers of wooden shingles and some sort of foam product as well (often used when mounting vinyl siding).

This past spring I went solar. The power company here has a monopoly but allows (their approval) a system to be installed that is designed to produce as much power as you use in a year so they typically look at your previous year's consumption as a watermark so to speak. Right now the systems would be roughly 20 year payback but, at the time, there was a government program underway to try to get a significant shift to renewable energy so it reduced that payback time significantly to about 10 years (by my calculations).

The solar system is still grid tied so there are no batteries. Power is still supplied by the grid in times of no sun or low sun and measured by a bi-directional meter. It's pretty amazing stuff.
