actually, the sounds available from it aren't so obvious. its a lot fatter tone than you'd suspect. the neck pup is full on woman tone. the bridge pup is bright and full. the mixed tones are obviously somewhere in the middle. most people think that Rickenbackers are all Beatles, Byrds, and Petty. but really, especially with the "hi-gain" pickups, its more like The Jam and Fugazi. i wouldn't be surprised to get great rockabilly and jazz tones out of it either.
