Mayor criticized for White House watermelon patch e-mail

LOS ALAMITOS - A local businesswoman and community volunteer is looking for a public apology after the mayor sent out an e-mail that she said is racist and offensive.

Keyanus Price, an African American, said she was appalled when she received an e-mail from Mayor Dean Grose's personal account that showed a picture of the White House with a watermelon patch imposed as the White House garden.

"I was horrified when I read that e-mail," Price said. "What I'm concerned about is how can this person send an e-mail out like this and think it is OK?"

Being a public official, Price said, made the matter worse.

"He's putting the city into a bad place, and he is a liability," Price wrote in an e-mail.

Gross sent an e-mail apology to Price, her boss at Trend Offset Printing and the City Council saying he did not intend to be offensive. He also called and left Price a message, he said.

"It was just poor judgment on my part, and I am deeply sorry," he said.

"It wasn't meant to hurt her."

The council received the e-mail from Price's boss and also received a copy of the apology. Councilman Ken Stephens said he didn't receive the original e-mail.

"Being totally out of the loop on this one, I think I would be speaking out of turn if I said anything about it," he said. "I would think that anything like that at all would be inappropriate but, again, I haven't seen the e-mail." Calls to the other three Los Alamitos council members were not returned.

Price said she wants a public apology for the e-mail and today contacted The Orange County Register to share the brief exchange that took place on Sunday.

Grose's e-mail included the picture with a heading that read, "No Easter Egg hunt this year."

"I think he's saying that since there's a black president, there will be no need to hunt for eggs since they're growing watermelons in the front yard this year," Price wrote.

She responded to the e-mail with: "Hey, that's not nice at all. Not all black people like watermelon… you should know better than that."

Gross replied: "The way things are today, you gotta laugh every now and then. I wanna see the coloring contests."

Price said Grose's response upset her more.

"As soon as I saw his response; that put me over the top because it was no big deal to him," she said.

Price and Gross have worked together in the past – they both sit on the board of the Youth Center, and she often works with city officials in the community representing her employer. The two have exchanged e-mails in the past.

The e-mail was sent to at least one other person, but the mayor said he isn't sure how many people received it. He said there is a "small group" of people he sometimes forward e-mails to.

In his apology to Price via e-mail, Gross wrote that he was not representing himself as a public official.

"It was not sent to a whole bunch of people, and it went through my personal e-mail," he said. "People e-mail things all the time, but that's not an excuse."

Peter Eliasberg of the ACLU said that while the mayor wasn't acting as a city official at the time, it doesn't mean that it was OK to send.
"Even though as much as we may always think they're always public officials, they're not always public officials; it's kind of going out as a private citizen," Eliasberg said. "That doesn't mean that she doesn't have every right to demand a public apology. It seems like it was pretty offensive."

People need to find more serious things to be offended about.

Whites are constantly ridiculed in television and movie content, black comedians, and often enough in dialogues with blacks, especially among youth. Even in today's music. Whites don't make a big deal of it because there's an apologetic mindset among today's whites. They go along to get along. My Cherokee Blood quantum is roughly 40%. I'm about as white as Obama is. How much ridicule and parody have Native Americans endured? A fucking lot, but you don't see us crying foul at every opportunity.

The photograph, in it's humorous context, is amusing. The lady needs to shut her yap.

This, of course, is just my humble opinion. If yours differs I totally respect that, but don't bag on mine.

Ultimately an elected official should hold themselves to a higher standard, though. How did he not know that eventually someone that would get offended (or not even that but just wants some political payback or something) wouldn't make a scene out of it?

I'd be pissed if I had voted for someone who was proven to be such a moron. racism aside....

If you see him as a moron, then I have to see you and all whites as morons. Re-read my edited post above about Native Americans' position.

I doubt the guy is a moron. And I'll bet he's about 1/100th as racist as Spike Lee, Jesse Jackson, or Chris Rock.

Hold your judgment and try to think of it in a lighter context. It's humor. You gotta see it that way. In humor, you gotta exploit attributes, and each race has a myriad of them.

No harm was done. Oh, and Watermelon ROCKS!

I think there is a time and place for certain jokes. I dont mind being messed with about being Irish, I've got friends at work who are Jewish and we mess with each other sometimes, I've got one friend in particular and we mess with each other (he's a black guy) about race, but it's all very lighthearted. My wife's Italian, and we joke with each other all the time, especially about her grandfather who used to refer to me as "that Irish boy", or me "th Irish boy" making gnocchi for her, when I frequently call her "you guinea brat!" (from the Godfather...)

I'd NEVER do it with someone I didnt know really really well, and I think there is a context in which it's alright. I think this is NOT in that context, though. I think it is completely inappropriate for a Mayor to do. Just MHO.

The dude sent it to a group of people he sees as his "friends" from his personal email account. Either this chick turned on him or he accidentally sent it to her in the group.

I give the guy the benefit of the doubt on this one. This is really non- news.

incredibly bad judgment...

especially in the wake of the NY Post thing.

doesn't anyone think before they send out email?

I think the emails are inappropriate. I am not comfortable recieving them, I wouldn't make a stink about it, but I'm not fond of them.

I think where he really went wrong was with the response that he sent back to her when she called him on his inappropriateness. That, IMO, is where the real meat of this story lies. She told him she didn't care for it, he should have just said I'm sorry and taken her off of his firendly email list, what he did however, was exacerbate the situation and then throw in an even more offensive reference to boot. That really was a moronic move.

This.

Regardless of what one thinks is humor, it is commonl knowledge that this type of thing will offend some people whether you think it should or not. Fact is it does. I personally dont see the need in offending anyone but as an elected official it is just plain ............... well, unbelievable.

with all of the heinous things elected officials do, why is this one any more unbelieveable? yeah, its really dumb. but unbelievable? i can think of far worse.

I'm much less sensitive to being offended by such things as most people seem to be.

And I'd say racist, and not cool.

True, he didn't kill anyone but this is a fairly "integrated" society here. You really can't get elected in any city in southern California without at least giving lip service to the fact that this is a bad idea.

The latest newsletter by an Inland Republican women's group depicts Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama surrounded by a watermelon, ribs and a bucket of fried chicken, prompting outrage in political circles.

The October newsletter by the Chaffey Community Republican Women, Federated says if Obama is elected his image will appear on food stamps -- instead of dollar bills like other presidents. The statement is followed by an illustration of "Obama Bucks" -- a phony $10 bill featuring Obama's face on a donkey's body, labeled "United States Food Stamps."

The GOP newsletter, which was sent to about 200 members and associates of the group by e-mail and regular mail last week, is drawing harsh criticism from members of the political group, elected leaders, party officials and others as racist.
The group's president, Diane Fedele, said she plans to send an apology letter to her members and to apologize at the club's meeting next week. She said she simply wanted to deride a comment Obama made over the summer about how as an African-American he "doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

"It was strictly an attempt to point out the outrageousness of his statement. I really don't want to go into it any further," Fedele said in a telephone interview Tuesday. "I absolutely apologize to anyone who was offended. That clearly wasn't my attempt."
...
"I didn't see it the way that it's being taken. I never connected," she said. "It was just food to me. It didn't mean anything else."
...
Sheila Raines, an African-American member of the club, was the first person to complain to Fedele about the newsletter. Raines, of San Bernardino, said she has worked hard to try to convince other minorities to join the Republican Party and now she feels betrayed.

"This is what keeps African-Americans from joining the Republican Party," she said. "I'm really hurt. I cried for 45 minutes."
...
The newsletter is not the first such episode Barajas has had to respond to this week. The Sacramento Bee on Wednesday posted an image it said was captured from the Sacramento County GOP Web site that showed Obama in a turban next to Osama bin Laden.

It said: "The difference between Osama and Obama is just a little B.S." The site also encouraged members to "Waterboard Barack Obama," a reference to a torture technique. The Sacramento County party took down the material Tuesday after being criticized.

Mark Kirk, a spokesman for the San Bernardino County GOP chairman, said he expects Chairman Gary Ovitt to also have a talk with Fedele and to attend the group's local meeting next week to discuss the issue with members, although the county GOP has no formal oversight role over the club. Kirk said these kinds of depictions hurt the party's ongoing efforts to reach out to minorities.

not surprising. tasteless, sure. but not surprising.

her statement was "i was trying to make fun of the people who say stuff like this." its kinda like the NY Post cartoon from last week. i don't believe for a second that the person who created this didn't know the joke (if there even was one) would get lost.

I agree.

Not heinous but unbelievable in that an elected official knows without a doubt that an offensive email would create a crap storm.

And though not heinous, not cool.

considering how many elected officials are in the news for stupidity related to their job, i'm not sure they really know anything "without a doubt".

True, you point has been proven on many occasions. I guess I should know better than to expect any different by now.
