Whoever said he was "fired"? He went his own way because he had a wife and two kids and was tired of being on the road for 200+ days a year. They are still in close contact.

She's not. She was trained by Tom Jackson, whom many consider to be the best live show producer in the world.


I'm probably going to step back from this conversation for a few days. I might check back in in a few days to see how the debate is going and take a look at some of the other threads. Seems like a pretty cool little community of minds to pick. For those that were civil (Gary included), it was good talking to you and I hope you all have a great day! i am going to step back from it as well. I have my views which, I realize, are out if step with the times. I will not change them. I appreciate Wade's input and wish him well in his endeavors.

I am not a Taylor Swift fan. I'm not a teenage girl. But. I cannot deny her talent nor her success.

She is succeeding in a very competitive, difficult, fickle business.
 
Here's my last comment on this subject.

We learn really quickly that when we are playing live, most of the audience does not hear, nor do they care, about gaffs we may make while earnestly playing our songs. We hear it. They don't.

But if we just stand there, completely disengaged from the entertainment aspect of what we do, those people DO notice.

If one is looking to achieve success, which I am interpreting as stardom (which, to varying degrees is 'making it'), then presentation is an important part of that package.

Is that calculating, sure it is. As calculating as writing a killer hook so the song goes over big. And there's consultants for that as well.

And.

How about showing some respect to people. Wade, nor anyone willing to engage in debate, deserves the heaping pile of OJ shit that he was handed.

I have a lot of respect for Taylor Swift.

So much so in fact, that when I go to the studio later I think I will ask Mark Connors (a friend of hers) how she might feel about a dude she doesn't know trying to make money off of her name by virtue of a loose association.

I totally agree. It makes me laugh about Swift haters like my wife. I always ask her: "What did she do to you?"; "Uh, nothing - I just don't like her!". Not enough of a good reason IMO to admit such hatred.
 
I don't really have a dog in this race. It just strikes me as something tenuously legit at best. But, I don't want drama, so I am just gonna ignore it from here.

I don't begrudge a guy trying to make a living, buy I see stuff like this all the time and the overwhelming majority of them are a waste of money. The attitude of the site is condescending and off-putting to me. Obviously I am not alone.

So be it.

Based on further reading of this thread it seems there's some notion that the records companies asked for little girls that will sing songs about being mad about adolescent lost loves and hurt related to them?

I have no use for Taylor Swift and the main catalyst is her lack of ability to actually sing. She is not strong in anyway, ability to to sing in/to pitch being the first one and then you can start working on dynamics. So the record companies have clearly state to the world and specifically Wade that musical ability is of minimal to no importance. They just need an aesthetic and supposedly captivating performer to market.

On every level that's horrible and seems to miss what I hold important about music in every way.

I don't think Wade means to suck, but this approach to "art" certainly does. Commerce and art are not the best bedfellows. The former usually compromises the latter, and pretty much has forever. It's the cream that rise to the top despite this that I'm interested in. That said, the cream of the crop is different for everyone. So I'm going to stop rambling.

We seem to be doing this more and more often. I had an ex student of mine make a couple of posts a week or so ago, get treated like the second coming of John Watt because of something he posted and asked to have his account deleted. He just wanted to participate in an online forum run by his old guitar teacher and because he wasn't hip to forum culture or recent history here he was not treated very well. The guys involved in that one have apologized but I still feel terrible about the situation and I didn't even have anything to do with it.

I've stayed out of this thread because I have my own prejudices regarding talent and performance coaches based on years of working with indie artists (and being one myself) here in the LA area in the 90's. Now that my inbox has been blowing up with complaints about this thread I decided to take a read and it kind of bummed me out. Wade would not have become a part of this forum (even if for just a few days) if we had not posted here about him and as someone who has a bunch of online content out there I watch where my traffic comes from and try to keep an eye on positive or negative situations that have my name (or my companies name) attached to it too. Thats just a part of working in the social media era so I don't fault him for that.

One of the PM's I received today had the phrase "attack the idea. not the person" in it and I'd like that to become the spirit of discussion here. If everyone agreed with each other all the time it would be a pretty boring world but personal attacks have no place on this forum.
