The used market is ridiculous currently...

I took a 4-5ish year off of buying and selling gear. Getting back into it is a hard new reality.

I have no idea how many early 2000's fender mim standards are asking 750. It was 350 new, and it's not exactly vintage.

Same with Jackson and charvels. Your charvel 375 is not worth a grand. Nor is your $350 bc rich worth $800.

I'm starting to feel old.

And somebody tell me what happened to carvin?

I think the price of new brings used price along. Add to that the pandemic, can't find what you are looking for new makes used even more valuable. Back to the new prices, and feeling old- Every day I check the stupid deal of the day and, every day I feel like my dad saying, " you could spend the day at the Orpheum for a nickel" because, the sale price is what the everyday price should be. Every day I ask, who the hell would pay full price for that?

I don't know if this is related, but I'm seeing the full-timers around here liquidating a lot of their non-essential gear. There's a chance they're listing it because of spousal pressure, and so a high price tag might be a passive-aggressive safeguard. Or at least, it's sentimental/loved gear that they can't afford to put up at clearance prices.

prices are nuts but the stuff in my watch list is not selling which is pretty interesting.

There’s kind of a supply/demand imbalance in terms of the pandemic making people want to get gear and there just being less gear available.

And the big names recently revamped their main lines, which will drag used gear prices up to match.

And like Chicken Man said, a lot of people who are serious to semi-serious are tweaking their gear hoard/rigs and may be selling in a pinch so that will weird up the market.

And I suspect that Reverb (like ebay before it) has smoothed out pricing across various markets meaning that the possibility of a great deal is less because everyone has access to similar market info.

I also think there’s a bit of a fashion change happening in the gear market which could be playing out as prices seeming off-kilter.

I have a particular instrument in my Reverb watch list that was long since discontinued -- no one cared when they were new. They made plenty, so the whole "rare" BS is out the window for anyone with even a cursory knowledge of it, and yet used prices are what they sold for NEW 13 years ago. There's even a broken/non-functioning one in absolutely horrible shape for $1k. They just sit....and sit....and sit....because everyone thinks their gear is worth something. It usually isn't.

Everything is insane right now. Used Dunlop JH-F1 Fuzz Faces are going for over $300. AnalogMan Sunfaces are going for double the price, but they're still available new with a 1-2 week wait time.

Makes me feel even luckier that I got my DRRI for a steal.

Deals can still be found, but yeah, it takes effort. I got my Vela for $775 2 weeks ago, while the lowest listed is currently $944. Of course, mine was listed for $875 and I offered $775 expecting to meet in the middle, but you never know what a seller will accept...remember on Reverb that a lot of the prices are "asking", not firm, and if something has been sitting for a bit it rarely hurts to make an offer. That said, overall used prices are up. Good time to sell :).

I sold a couple of my PRSs about a year too soon. I had some that (used) I was buying for 1400-1800... then after a few mods, a few years of play, I sold for $2500-2800 and was happy....

.... now Cores are up in the $3500 - $7000 brand new... and I've seen used guitars for $3000 - 5000. :embarrassed:

i laugh at the people trying to get insane prices on 5150s just bc EVH died. its like, bitch that amp was worth 400-500 bucks a few months ago. EVH never played the one you are trying to sell so there is no way anyone is going to give you 1700 for it now just bc you are trying to capitalize on that man's death.

Depends on which amp. I think the only amps he never really played were the lunchbox ones. He played all the rest. The last album was recorded with a mix of the 50W heads and the Magic Marshall.

I've noticed this trend as well. Used PRS core guitars (to include my favorite models, the 245s) seem to have jumped in price used by a few hundred dollars in the past year. In the near past, I could buy an SC245, or even a Ted 245, for 1500. Now, they start at 1800+. Frankly, that's making me think of selling my McSoapy. With PRS, I thought that the S2 line would water down the brand when introduced, but it seems to have done the opposite. People are OK paying $1500 for them, which has jacked up the price considerably for any core model.

I also noticed the MIM fender thing. I thought that was nuts.

Gibson traditionals (my fave LP model) have also gone up $300 in the same period. I used to see them for 1200-1300, and now they're 1500-1600 when the price of a new standard is around 2000. So that's weird to me.

I think he means EVH never played that actual amp, as in the one they are selling. Not the model.

I bought a certain new limited-edition guitar last year for $799. I looked it up on Reverb last week, and there was one listed in the US in “mint” condition for $1299 (!). That listing was 12 hours old, and had like 9 watchers.

It was gone a few days later.

I now have something else that makes it redundant.

Cha-ching!

used gear is all relative to the particular item & if the item is somewhat rare, or if there are a bazillion examples floating around.

even when I list 'rare' items it may take 3, 6, 12, even 24 months for them to move.

I don't get in a hurry to sell when I list guitars for sale.

Case in point, today's SDOTD.

Regular price for a Musician's Gear guitar case is $100? Who the fuck would pay $100 for that? It's on sale for $80. Everyday price should be $50.

Some retail inside baseball...house brands are very frequently made to be discounted. Very few people ever do pay the “full price” of $100. Instead these sorts of items are on perpetual discount so that you feel like you’re getting a break. That’s pretty much how Macy’s and Kohl’s house brand clothing works, for example.

Plus those MF cases are priced so that the “free shipping” is baked into the price.
