That's how I usually do it. I seem to always pick songs I've never played before.
I've been playing more acoustic lately and it just so happens that a song popped up from 1973 (birth year) that I was learning to play. So I shouldn't REALLY butcher it....but you never know!

I do that most of the time too. It's more fun than just rehashing stuff you've known for years, plus it builds your repertoire.
