Also, based on the tomographic x-ray pic, it doesn't seem that the eel is still completely contained in his digestive tract. The tail seems awfully high in the abdomen to still be in the bowel. Of course, I don't read these things all day, so I could be wrong, but it seems like an upper colonic puncture, with the eel's tail in the interstitial space.
 
Wow. I didn't read the article. I just looked at the pics and read the headline. Damn things looks high enough to be through the omentum and up near the liver/spleen. Dude is looking at some serious abdominal surgery and a shit ton of antibiotics. Lucky to be alive, but unlucky enough to get an eel stuck in his ass. :messedup:
 
A buddy told me about '2 men 1 horse' wherein a guy gets butt-pounded by a horse, refuses medical treatment and dies shortly afterward from his colon being torn up. There is treatment for these kind of folks when nature is allowed to run its course.
