Steve Vai is a good sport

The other guy sounded more like Vai usually does than Vai actually did in that video.

That guy's awesome, though.
 
I read an interview with Vai a few years ago where he said he'd have to practice like 12 hours a day to keep all of his chops up to be able to do some of the stuff he did 30 years ago. I'm sure with being older, probably having a family and whatnot, he doesn't practice 12 hours a day.

What's with the tape over the Marshall logos? I guess Steve's Carvin endorsements has him doing that?

And this must be in Brazil, it looks like the kid is playing a Tagima guitar.
 
I've long since lost interest in anything Vai does, but I think his tone has only gotten better as the years have progressed. And maybe you're just not hearing the right tunes of his if you think all he does is weedly-weedly. Sure, he does do that, but man -- his harmonic sensibilities are pretty darn advanced. I certainly get that you don't like him, but the dude can flat out play, and although I haven't bought any of his stuff in 20 years, I still think he's great. Frankly, I thought the other guy was a bad imitation of what Vai does so well.
 
I watched a few minutes of Gravity Storm but it’s just boring. Does Vai ever do anything where he’s not the center of attention like Satch in Chickenfoot or Bonamassa and Hart?

Or like Barabara Streisand in Barbara Streisand, or Frank Sinatra in Frank Sinatra, or Charlie Parker in Charlie Parker? It's about them. That's the whole point.
 
Vai is a true master of not only the guitar but understanding how all of the pieces fit together. He's done arrangements for full orchestras.

Even though he is one One of my favorite guitar players, I'll admit that some of his music is way out there. Even for me.

He is far beyond just the shredder. check out some of the music that he does like

As a sidenote, some people give him a lot of crap because he can be a bit outlandish on stage. But I look at that as being an entertainer. Check out some jihn petrucci videos . He is a monster player for sure. But boring as hell to watch

I know that he recorded with Lydon on the PIL album but unsure if he toured with them.

I remember the articles in Guitar Player where Frank said that Vai's sound sucked. Vai's sound has evolved alot since those early days.

"Ice pick through your forehead." His guitar sound today is completly different than it was back in the 80s, and it still changed a lot from Zappa to Alcatrazz and DLR.

What I love about Vai is that as amazing as he is, he has flaws and he worked to iron them out. It humanizes him and shows us that we can get better just like he did.
