Steve Vai is a good sport

That was fuckin outstanding.Totally_jammin_out

An experience like that can really make a person up their game.

That video is even more fun when you realize that Steve Vai got smacked down by a guy who usually posts YouTube videos of himself shredding cover arrangements in a bedroom.

Personal tastes. I admire his ability. I abhor his sound. I find nothing "musical" or "melodic" in what he does. Pinch harmonic whammy bar pulls and dive bombs sandwiched between blazing fast weedly scales does nothing for me.

I can't play anywhere near as fast as he can, but I can certainly make just as much gawd awful noise.

Then there's his "tone".

Everything he plays sounds like it's coming from an AM Radio plugged into a drive in movie speaker from 1972.

I guess because he's always in such a hurry to traverse the entirety of the fretboard, he simply hasn't the time for such superfluous things like contour and tone controls. Just set everything to full shittastic and start shredding.

I'd rather listen to a garbage disposal with a couple of spoons in it.

You have no idea what you're talking about and that's...ok.

I'll also assume that everybody here is fucking around and fully realize that Vai was being a nice humble guy and allowed that young wanker to have his spotlight. That guy was barely pulling off techniques that Vai invented 30 years ago. Vai is a smart good guy. Nothing good would come from Vai destroying him as a man.

Hence my assertion that he is a good sport. Of course he could have eviscerated that basement dweller in a manner that sucked the poor bastards will to live right out of his asshole. I have no doubt about that. I also really enjoyed watching that clip because if nothing else, it gave me much greater appreciation for Steve Vai the man.

He showed real graciousness in that clip that is exceptionally uncommon among high caliber musicians. I applaud him for that.

I still stand by my opinions on his playing. Astonishing skills producing offensively non-musical and tonally bankrupt noise.

It just isn't my thing. Not a shred fan. There are some rare exceptions, but for the most part, I'll take an emotive, melodic Gilmour type solo over a wank fest any time.

Really, none of the big name axe slingers do much for me. Vai, Satch , Battio, Bettencourt, Malmsteen... all crazy talented guys. All equally uninteresting. Eric Johnson is a guy that I assume is more or less in that group, but while I'm still not likely to found listening to any of his records, he at least manages to create "songs" with melodies and bridges and other key ingredients that qualify a piece as music.

If shredding were an Olympic Sport, Vai and his contemporaries would be Gold Metalists.

It isn't. They're not.

Instead, they are the Michael Bay of the guitar world. No story, no plot, just lots of mindless action sequences and blowing shit up.

I interview these guys for a living and they've all been pretty gracious. As a matter of fact I'm interviewing Vai again this week at the Harmony Hut. I don't understand why you think he's some exception. And FYI: Vai writes songs. Lots of them. Orchestras preform them too. He's a composer. Not a wanker. You don't build an empire like he has just wanking up and down the fretboard. That's for YouTube guitarists who can't get into bands.

His tone has changed drastically over his career from Frank Zappa until now. And his current live tone is pretty damn rich and bodacious. Lastly it's fine that you don't like his music or the way he plays, but give him credit for creating marketable product that millions of people are purchasing that's not you. Blanket statements like the one you made give me the impression that God was speaking a universal truth/reality to you or something, but the fact is your opinion is not completely informed. He's done a lot of things. You heard something you didn't like, and formed an opinion about his entire creative output and career.
