Guitar Heel
Demented Trick
My wife would like a camera that isn’t her iPhone. But she’d rather not spend a fortune. Any ideas?

For that price range you are probably looking for a "point and shoot" kind as opposed to a DSLR
This may help:

This, and it's especially noticeable if you zoom at all. Plus it's easy to put a P&S on a pocket tripod for taking group photos where you want to be in them using the timer mode. It's a PITA to try and prop up a smartphone to do that.Canon Powershot or Nikon Coolpix will work out. If making prints are in the plans, a <200 point and shoot will have a better sensor and better lens than a camera phone, hence delivering a better print.
Cameras are a lot like guitars. You can get affordable gear that is "good enough" for most folks, or you can go hi end and spend ridiculous amounts of money for all kinds of extra gear.Sell a guitar. An expensive one. Then start looking at cameras. Save half your budget for lenses.
