Photography folks...recommendation for a decent camera under $200?

My wife would like a camera that isn’t her iPhone. But she’d rather not spend a fortune. Any ideas?

I don’t know the first thing about this stuff...
 
sorry, can't really help. the only things i know anything about are the big DSLRs. not what you're looking for.
 
In that price range, the camera in her phone is going to be tough to beat TBH. Unless she wants a more "camera-like" form factor to better hold and steady it, which would be rational. Or something specialized like some more robust water resistance...

These days you can't go far wrong with any of the major makers - Sony, Nikon, Canon, etc... - shop the ones in the price range you are interested in that have the features she wants.
 
I'm really happy with the little Canon point and shoot I bought a few years back. We have a big DSLR camera, but it's bulky to take on outings sometimes, so we got this for something easy to shoot with that will fit in a pocket or purse. Great with motion and low-light stuff. I can't for the life of me remember the model #. I'll look it up when I get home. It was around $200 though, I think.
 
Panasonic Lumix P&S cameras carry Leica lenses, and in my experience, take great shots (I have a lumix P&S and we have two Canon DSLRs for the serious stuff). I'll bet you can find one for under $200 on your local CL...
 
Canon Powershot or Nikon Coolpix will work out. If making prints are in the plans, a <200 point and shoot will have a better sensor and better lens than a camera phone, hence delivering a better print.

This, and it's especially noticeable if you zoom at all. Plus it's easy to put a P&S on a pocket tripod for taking group photos where you want to be in them using the timer mode. It's a PITA to try and prop up a smartphone to do that.
 
I am kinda in the same boat except my budget is a bit larger. My Nikon P7700 gave up on me in the middle of summer. Major bummer. That camera was a beast. It is like a point and shoot that thinks it's a DSLR. Lately I've been looking at the Canon G7's. Thing is Amazon has 'em for 650, and I really don't feel like spending that much for a camera again.
 
What iPhone does she have? If it's a 6s or higher, it will shoot RAW with a 3rd party camera app, which will help with the post processing a little.

I'd look at getting some of the addon lenses you can get for smartphones. MKBHD did a nice roundup of some of the lenses you can get here.

As noted, her iPhone is probably as good as most point and shoots these days.
