So, I was thinking about how some people have certain picks that they like, and I'm like that too. And then I seem to have taken it a step further. To my ear, I have found that certain guitars (mainly acoustics at the moment, but I'll be expanding this to see if it applies to electrics, too) seem to respond well to certain picks. For instance, I have a solid wood spruce/mahagony guitar that sounds best with a medium celluloid pick, the Taylor - solid spruce/rosewood - seems to like a medium Tusq pick or a medium nylon pick, while the Takamine - solid spruce/rosewood seems to like a medium nylon or a medium to thin celluloid pick.

So, is it just me, or am I stumbling onto something you guys have known for a long time?
 
I've only been using a pick for about 5 years now, but I use my plastic thumb pick and finger pick on all of my acoustics. But I am notorious for not having an ear for tone.
 
I've changed my picks over the years, always moving to something thicker. I currently use Dunlop Tortex 1.14 mm. I never really explored different pick material or thickness for sound effects.
 
I've settled on the DUnlop Ultex Jazz III for most playing but if I'm recording steel string acoustic strumming I'll switch to a Fender celluloid medium 351.
 
Hell Guitar's Super Blacks. I used to use the tiny Fender Jazz picks, These are Dunlop size, but bite and sweep like no other pick I have ever played, Gave one to a guy who plays nothing but graphite, and he was blown away. Damn great pick.

Since 1980 I have used no other type...

I will never change at this point and all other picks feel weird to me
 
I seemed to have settled on the yellow Ultex Sharp .73

It's lessened the effect of my sledge hammer picking hand. A bit.

I can get five picks out of the average credit-sized card. I now have literally hundreds of picks. I like the ones made out of expired CA drivers licenses and iTunes giftcards the best...
 
I use Tortex .88 for most everything, but if I'm farting around the house, I use anything heavy. You can get unmarked Fender heavies on ebay- 10 bucks for 100.
 
Lately I've been partial to a Wegen M150. I'd lost it for months, but recently it surfaced in the laundry. I ordered more of them while it was missing so now I have four, but this one has a certain undefinable something...
