I guess now that I am back in the DC area I will have to start watching the Caps again.

this is what Fehr does. he was the one who orchestrated the MLB walkout in '94. the owners certainly are due their part of the blame. but the players association knew exactly what would happen when they hired him.

There's plenty of blame on that plate for everyone:
A third factor was the removal of owners from the process. At many of the major bargaining sessions, a group of hardline owners sat across the table from the union representatives and players. Those sessions were generally unproductive and, at times, fractious. More progress was made in early December when some less militant owners joined the talks and Bettman and Fehr temporarily excluded themselves. But the hardest of the hardliners, Boston’s Jeremey Jacobs and Calgary’s Murray Edwards, remained involved and those sessions couldn’t finish off the agreement. Talks came crashing to a halt when the players said they wanted Fehr back in the process, that they were not trained in the art of closing the deal, and having their leader present was something they were certainly entitled to do. Edwards reportedly told them that Fehr’s return would be a deal-killer and things ground to a halt. Following that episode, the league wisely decided against active ownership participation.

I used to love NHL hockey. I watched about half as much as I used to after the first lockout, and I doubt I will watch much at all now.

I still love hockey and have season tickets to out local ECHL team, but I'm pretty much done with the NHL.

By most accounts (like the article mentions), several owners participating in the negos were highly contentious and divisive even Fehr wasn't participating. They were plenty toxic on their own.

Edit: either way, they've collectively manged to screw whatever traction hockey was gaining over the past few years with general population interest. Back to square one and rebuilding interest beyond the core audience.

Seriously, after the last lockout in which the owners got everything that they wanted, I don't blame the players for hiring Fehr and standing their ground. The mess that the NHL owners wanted to 'clean up' was created by the conditions that they set forth when they won the 'homerun' during the last lockout. Much of the terrible finances in the NHL has to do with Bettman trying to force hockey upon markets that don't want it...hello Phoenix? Are you there?

Fehr did what he had to do for baseball players back then and he did what he had to do for hockey players now - the owners were F'ing themselves and signing big contracts even in August...then crying about money in September.

Gary Bettman = Butt Goblin.

I am curious to see how "conditioning" is going to play into this.
It may not be the team with the most talent, hard work, etc... this year. May be the one who is able to skate after 40 minutes.

They've all been training and practicing, all be it on a lesser scale I suppose.
They're all well rested.
It should be interesting but I'm not sure I care enough anymore to watch much.

They should just make the whole season this short on a regular basis.
It would put more emphasis on each game. Make each one count for more in larger scheme of things. A tie game would suck again in terms of points.

What is this hockey you speak of. Frankly (with all due respect to the hardcore fans), my care level was pretty low prior to this. Now it is at about zero. If the NHL ceased to exist I would not care a lick.

I'm apparently going to have ~24 Caps season tickets I don't have much interest in right now :). The NHL has pissed me off now.

...but if you must watch a team....the Caps and the Edmonton Oilers are going to be quite entertaining.
