New Catalinbread Shopping

Yep.
Interested in another Catalinbread pedal. I just love them so much. More of the dirt variety than the modulation types. Was inspired by Howie's little old one he was selling.

Thinking of kind of a fuzz sound that will work with my Fender Concert. The Concert hates my EHX Little Big Muff.

This one looks interesting. It has that volume knob response thing I like about my other Catalinbread dirt box.



This one looks cool too.



A little bummed I missed out on the one Howie sold in 3 seconds yesterday.

But not sure if any of them will play nicely with the Concert.


This one kind of splits the difference between fuzz and RAT. The Concert likes my RAT clone. But maybe my RAT clone is close enough to this one. (see below)



 
Yeah, forget the katzenkonig. The Rabid Rodent covers that.

This one could be another consideration that is a little dissimilar to stuff I already have.



Looks like it again is responsive to guitar volume knob.

The Sabbra Cadabra is effectively a DLS MKIII and a treble booster in one. Like the Katzenkonig, it's a little noisy.

Maybe this is just the trip I'm on right now, but I think the pedal you're looking for is the DOD Carcosa.

Those aren’t my sounds. Fuzzrite is, well, a Fuzzrite. Karma Suture is a Harmonic Percolator. Carcosa is loosely based on the Maestro FZ1s.

Do you have an opinion on what would work well with the concert, And why? Knowing of course that the little big man doesn’t seem to work with it well.

Missed this question. No. I never really have.

I have stacked my old DS-1 before my Bad Monkey with success. More with the C-30 than the concert. I use the Rat clone and form. 5 with the concert more.

The Big Muff hates the Concert because it runs too clean and doesn't have enough mids. If you put the Bad Monkey or F5 set slightly dirty after the Muff, you should get a much better response out of it.
 
I’m not sure I can help. I’ve never played a Concert or a brown face amp so I’m not familiar with how they sound. I’ve also never owned a Catalinbread dirt pedal so I’m not very familiar with them.

The smart move is to keep an eye for them used on Reverb. If you can get it for a little less than they list it for, you can probably get your money back on a re-sale if you don’t like it. Not that I would know anything about that :grin:

I saw the fuzzrite for $90. Kinda liking the idea of either it or the Karma Suture. But need to study more about the character of a Fuzzrite (which sounds fun) and a Harmonic Percolator first. I just know I like the vids of them and the overall vibe. I am that technical.

A Muff is a a very stable sounding fuzz. It just doesn't have any mids. So it does very well with a pedal after it that has mids, or a dirty Marshall (which is really what it was designed to push anyway).



A Fuzzrite or other spitty fuzz isn't going to sound like a muff.
 
Now you've got me looking into spitty fuzzes.

So, if you like Catalinbread and you like spitty fuzzes, then either the Merkin or Fuzzrite is for you. The Fuzzrite is true to the original with modern components. The Merkin has an added post-gain stage for more volume. It also plays nicer with dirt pedals after it. It's obvious to see why after Nic was able to buy the Fuzzrite name they switched, but I would go for a Merkin if that's your thing.

As for the aforementioned DOD Carcosa, it's based on the Maestro FZ-1s. Which I originally thought was the Fuzz Tone. Instead, it's based on the later Super Fuzz, which is much nastier. It gets kinda fuzzritey, but because of the added controls, can stray back into Tonebender territory, which is why I like it. My ThroBak sToneBender was awesome, but it had significant bass loss. And if you're using it as a boost into a dirty amp, that's exactly what you want. The Carcosa has a bass switch so it sounds fuller into a clean amp. So it'll sound better into my clean fender based amp on its own.

No matter how many videos you watch or how much research you do, until it is in your rig, you will never know if a pedal is going to work out. Fortunately, I don't refinish my pedals purple so when I do sell them, I can :grin:

It's true. That said, videos are helpful. Just maybe not as helpful as people want them to be.
