I heard about this over at My Les Paul Forums, and thought some of you might be interested...

Looks like really good quality, unlike cheesy kits... Just the neck and body, no hardware, and there are a few other models they make...

I have to say, when you price out the mahogany body and neck blank, maple top blank, ebony fret board blank, truss rod, and frets, the cost is about the same, so it's like you get it CNC cut perfect for no charge...

For the purist fanboys, they are not exact replicas, as the head stock angle has been lessened, and the tenon area has a slight change to clean it up...

So, if you ever wanted to put together a Les Paul with the hardware and finish of your choice, at a great price, this looks really promising...

I just ordered the Les Paul kit... Yes, I still intend to make an all redwood Les Paul, and admittedly, most of the build fun is eliminated, but if it is really high quality, then the joy will be in the finishing and in the playing...

So, I will be the guinea pig...

Please do post a detailed review. I might bite as well if the quality is good.
 
I actually already have a LP style body that I built. I just ran out of mahogany to build a neck from, so the unfinished body has been sitting for about 3 years now.

I'd really like to build a LP with a Floyd Rose. :embarrassed:

How come Gibson is letting them get away with calling these "blanks" Les Pauls?
And I've been reading about paulskirocks "redwood" Les Paul, enough to think about that wood too.
If I'm not mistaken, it's Redwood Trees that the British Columbia Haida use to make ocean going canoes.
They lay a tree down, and cut a trench along the top, filling it with heated stones and embers.
They keep this up until the tree is hot, and then everyone lines up on both sides, side by side hands.
Then they pull, stretching the tree out into the shape they want, and prop it up to cool and dry that way.
More than smooth!

No neck yet. I was planning on mahogany, but I didn't have enough to build another neck. I bought a huge chunk of Honduras mahogany and built a PRS style guitar before I did the LP style.

Of course, I never really finished the PRS style one either. :embarrassed: I'm not really happy with the way the finish turned out, so I need to strip it and redo it, then do a good fret level/crown and wire it all up.

On the PRS style, I used a hammer and chisel. And lots and lots of sanding.

John, this hunk of old growth redwood I have is from the California coast, and is what I made my tele body from... It is incredibly light and resonant, and is quite loud without an amp... So, I imagine the sound of an all redwood (with redwood burl top) Les Paul will be a bit different than one from mahogany and maple, but it will be light and resonant, I am sure...

That's why I suggested maple or mahogany. :embarrassed:

If you're not happy with the PRS-clone I'll be happy to take it off your hands. :grin:

It's nowhere near playable at this point. Well, that's not entirely true. It has strings on it, but the nut is just sitting there (on a metal shim) and the frets aren't even close to being level. It's also got some hazing in the clear coat. Oh, and none of the wiring is done.

See, you did all of the stuff I couldn't do. I could handle a neck and some soldering. As for the finish... there are evil thoughts in my mind about that. :embarrassed:
