Mrs.P
The Wonder Wench
So last week. A buddy come up to me and says, "hey weren't you a recruiter for a while?" I say yes, and he then goes on to ask me my thoughts on his kid joining the military, in particular becoming an officer in the Marine Corps.
Now I had to at this point work very hard at keeping a straight face. For this gentleman who has come to me and just asked me to encourage his son to try to get into the Naval Academy and become a Marine officer, has a 17 year old kid, who weighs nearly a half ton, is not allowed to be home alone after school, because Daddy thinks he might hurt himself and Mommy still helps him brush his hair. This kid is not the bad-ass material that I usually associate with the Marine Corp Officer Candidate Program. But who am I, so I explain to him that he needs to put the boy immediately on an excercise program, and if he is truly interested in trying to get into the Naval Academy, he really needs to be working on his applications and references. It is actually really late to be trying to get gubenatorial or senatorial references when you are already a Junior in High School. I also do no think he will pass a weight check, and I think it will be harder to get a waiver for that kind of thing with no real extra-curriculars under your belt than just pure academic programs. I tried my best to explain all this with my best straight face. He walked away all hopeful and Cheery.
Here is where it gets really funny and terribly sad) The next day he gets a call from his son. The boy begins the conversation with, "I know it was stupid and irresponsible!" Oh dear lord. What has the boy done.
Well, it seems that Daddy had promised to take the boy to the firing range later that afternoon. Mommy had left for vacation, so the boy was going to have to be home alone for the afternoon, until Daddy could get home. Boy didn't want to wait for daddy to get home and then have to take the time to clean and load the gun. A .22 pistol. So boy decides to do it himself. Apparently boy got clumsy with the loaded pistol and accidently shoots himself in the upper thigh. The bullet has lodged itself in the flesh above his knee.
He is fine, no one is hurt very badly, but OMG. This is a 17 year old boy, who wants to be a Marine Corp Officer. Where is our world taking us. messedup0
