If it breaks down a bit, I dont much care. I sorta want something I can tinker with and work on when needed. I was thinking about getting something really cool like an old Jag V-12 that needs work, but then I thought about parts and realized I'd be in over my head. Something like that Camaro, the parts are everywhere, and it's a pretty simple vehicle.

Aside from the usual suspects (Camaro/Firebird and the Mustang) what would you guys be looking at for little money if you didnt mind putting some work into it?
 
I'd say stay away from anything that old that has T-tops or a sun roof....you know my preference is for the 60's stuff but thats not such a great prospect in weather like yours...

They're gonna leak. I know. For my budget, anything is going to have problems. I'll deal with it. Though I would much prefer to deal with mechanical issues than body issues. And yeah, I thought about the weather too. I want another Bronco, but theyre EXPENSIVE for anything that's even salvageable. And 90 percent of them have been made into monsters. :(
 
The first car I thought of was a late sixties Duster with the slant six. Orange, of course.
That matches all the 55cc Yamaha bikes that came out back then.
 
I'd be looking at a 1st gen Talon/Eclipse myself. AWD/Turbo they are a hell of a lot of fun, the parts are everywhere, the motors are bulletproof (as long as you stay under about 15 psi), they're light and handle well and they're even good in the winter.

Or another one of these or these. I had an '87 TurboII that was probably the most fun car I've ever driven.

I've got an old 1994 Mazda MX3 that's still a lot of fun to drive around, and pretty easy to tinker with if you're so inclined. The V6 model is worth looking into, if you want something small, sporty and different.

It could be pretty cheap to get one and put a turbo kit on it to make a fun little street car.

IIRC, there are a handful of direct bolt turbo kits for the 1.6l motor that some (most? all?) of those had. they were designed for the Festiva with the same motor, but they'd work.

Those are pretty cool. My mom and several other members of her family had them for a long ass time in the 80's.
 
A friend spent $12,000 on an old AMC four door Eagle, whatever it's called.
A darker blue with the black trim, bigger tires, nice.
 
Those mazdas would be cool actually. I wasnt even thinking about them. Kinda why I posted this thread, was hoping for some other ideas. Ive never worked on a turbo though so that kinda concerns me. Still, yes, an old RX-7 would be very cool. Maybe a 300zx while Im thinking about the Japanese sportscars?

The GTs have a 1.8 (Mazda BP) same engine that's in the MX-5 from that same era, so there are a lot of turbos out there for it, you just have to get a different downpipe because of the way the engine is mounted. At least that's what I've read.
 
Stay the hell away from the old Jags. :eek: a buddy of mine had an 87 XJS V12 that was a friggin money pit. Those things are always broken down and expensive to fix.

As far as the RX-7's go, I'd actually recommend a non-turbo one. You'll have a much easier time finding one, they'll be wayyyyy cheaper and probably in better shape and it'll run forever as long as you don't beat on it too hard and keep the oil topped up. They're still incredibly fun to drive. Those motors are pretty stable until you put a turbo on them. Then shit starts breaking left and right. 300zx's are a lot of fun, too! There are certain things to be careful of with those, but I am woefully unaware of what they are. There is a 300zx forum out there though, I'm sure they could tell you.
