I think I'm going to put 10's back on all of my guitars.

It's an aesthetic thing. Your other guitars have beautiful classic lines that are very appealing to me. Even the Dano. Even though it's not overly so, it's too pointy for me. I've also never played a Ibanez neck I like. I also don't care for Floyd's. I can test my hand on the bridge the why I like.
 
Has anybody tried making your own custom string sets?
I was lead to making my own sets by picking a starting high E gauge, then mapping up the rest of the strings to be extremely close to that string's tension across the neck. Really made playing a lot nicer and the sound became nicely balanced.

I did this on one guitar, loved it, ended up doing it on all.
I have guitars starting with .007s all the way to .013 and with the balanced tension approach, yeah, will never go back.

Oh yeah, three have flats and still using this approach.

Just saying, I see everybody experimenting with gear and strings etc...

And if you're anywhere as insane as I might be, making your own picks is another area where you can dramatically affect your sound. I've gone down the path of making wooden picks and now into liquid plastics and customizing them to fit my style.

Just thought I'd spark something.... So many things, so little time... But its all cool.

This might help if anybody is interested. Make sure to set the scale length of your neck and then just start tracking down the strings...

i grew up playing this guitar. it's home. if i can do it on the Ibanez, then i can do it on any other guitar. it exposes all poor technique, including heavy handedness on the bridge. if you're pushing the bridge down, and the strings sharp, then your muting technique needs work. the thin neck makes you put your thumb in the right spot and not curl it over like rock players tend to do. and the volume knob is close enough to the standard strat placement that you have to develop a concise picking technique.

so it's all black. big deal. so's my dano baritone, except it has a cheapo piece of tape around it. my PRS is my #1 (technically the Ibanez is retired in favor of it) but the only guitar i'd trade it for would be a Suhr Modern. if anything, everything but the PRS, Ibanez, Taylor and Dano Convertible are just expensive experiments for me.
 
Hmmm.... I've always played 10's. When I started playing like 112 years ago I had 8's on my first guitar a LP, tried 9's, they sounded better than the 8's, so I tried 10's and they sounded even better and that was about all of the string gauges that were 'common' in those days. I stuck with 10's even when I switched to Strats and left Gibson guitars. I have 10-46 on everything now, my strats, my McCarty's, Gibson SG, Gretsch hollowbody etc.

I have to order the Gibsons online. No one really carries them with any reliability around here, even GC. And my own vendors don't have them anymore. It would be nice to use a string that most local guitar stores have in stock.

weird that your suppliers don't have them. i'd have thought at least one out of Musicorp, Harris Teller, and Tone King (though they're out here in NY) would have had them.

Musicorp did but I refuse to do buisness with them anymore. They can go fuck themselves. I've only kept an account open at KMC.

i'm not really certain how they stay in business. OTOH, when i ordered those Dunlop Primetone picks, i got them through the music school and he ordered from Musicorp. i ordered one pack, with 3 picks in it. the sales rep was not amused.
 
I don't know. They just suck, and I don't really do retail anymore so I'm not worried about it.
 
I played .010s for years while I was gigging/younger. These days I have .009s on my Fenders and .095s on everything else. Bends/ vibrato are much easier.
