Has anyone priced residential light bulbs lately?

I was thinking of switching to LED bulbs in my finished basement.

They have to be dimmable, and should be 60-75w equivalents, and NOT the cheap "stark white" ones.

Price for Incandescent (regular) light bulbs = $12 for ALL of them.

Price for LED light bulbs = about $200!

WTF?

I was in Home Depot, and I laughed in the guy's face.
"But they save you money."

"How do you figure that?"

"But they last a lot longer."

"Well, I can buy a hell of a lot of regular light bulbs for $200!"

That's ridiculous, usually they're between 10 and 15 euro's here. For 200 bucks you should be able to get some fancy ambient light system :embarrassed:
 
LED bulbs will drop in price eventually. I have one, I think we paid $1 for it on sale. It works well.
 
Yeah, because they need to be dimmable, apparently that adds to the price significantly.
Still fucking ridiculous, though.
 
There's always a subsidy/rebate situation to be found, and all of the LED bulbs I've seen are dimmable. We've just about totally switched over--I keep switching the incandescent and fluorescent bulbs around as they burn out--I just like to keep a cheap and non toxic incandescent in the lamp my two-year-old keeps knocking over.

The dimmability slope on the LEDs is way different than with the trad bulbs, so that's an issue, but we're just about to the point where I shouldn't need to buy another light bulb for a decade or two, and the energy savings (both lower lighting costs and the greater insulation from switching away from ceiling-puncturing can lights) are fantastic.
 
Don't know about anyone else but I've had these LED bulb blow out/short just like other bulbs. I do have a couple of LEDs in the house but I've not done a full blown exchange and simply will not.

seems like there's enough affordable dimmable led lights around. And even though they might be more expensive than normal bulbs they last a LOT longer.

$16 for a fucking light bulb is out of control. (75w equivalent dimmable bulb on that site).

I can buy a regular 75 watt incandescent bulb for under a buck.
 
I still have a bunch of regular bulbs in my garage, so I just keep using them. My wife bought them on sale somewhere. I have replaced the ceiling can spots and other difficult to reach bulbs with LEDs. Eventually, I will run out of regular bulbs and go full LED.
 
You're lucky to still find a standard incandescent bulb in California. Some wattage levels of them have been banned from retail sale for years, and what remains are the low wattage and goofy sized specialty bulbs for small lamps and candelabras.

I tried to get a new bulb for my wife's lava lamp (yes, she loves the damned thing) last week, but no joy. Had to order online. The only bulbs available in stores don't have enough wattage to melt the wax.

We have converted most of the house over to LED. I watch the Fry's Electronics ad for crazy sales and rebates, and when I see a really good deal I jump on it.

At least in our case, they have performed as advertised and we haven't had to replace any that I can recall.

I have been selective with LEDs.

They do throw a lot less heat. So, they are perfect for the lighting over the bar.

I had them in my office until the power base fell apart and I switched to a different system. I miss LEDs in my office. I have halogen now and it gets to be a bit of a sauna in there now.
